Sarnano
Hello, I'm looking for a recommendation of a bike rack for my Edge. I don't have a trailer hitch, so I'd be looking for a direct attachment to the the tail gate. I'd be carrying 3 bikes.
wlepse
I know this isn't what you want to hear but I would not recommend a tail gate attached bike rack, let alone for three bikes. Especially on the Edge with the rear spoiler I think you are looking for trouble. If you really want to get one though I would stick with a reputable brand that says it fits your vehicle, while it doesn't ensure you won't have problems at least you'll have a better chance than those ones sold at big box stores as one size fits all. rwolson
I'd contact a rack specialist like Rack Attack or Rack Outfitters for advice. Both Thule and Yakima prodcue well made products, but I can't recommend anything for a bike; kayaks yes, bikes, no. Also, stay away from the cheap rack systems sold at the various chain stores. JOEHIO
Ditto.................I remember one thing that my dad told me - "you get what you pay for" .
Sarnano
Sounds like the hitch mount system is a better way to go. I imagine the same advice here - get good rack. Just my observation... don't those hitch mount racks flop around when loaded with a few bikes? Just seems to be structurely unstable. Just my observation... don't those hitch mount racks flop around when loaded with a few bikes? Just seems to be structurely unstable. Some do but this is fixable. The one I have has a device that tightens the rack to the hitch pin taking the wobble out. Even with two heavy DH bikes there was no movement. But yes get a good rack. Recently I saw a rack made by Kuat that looked very impressive and it is made of aluminum so you don't have to worry about rust and it is much lighter if you plan on putting it on/taking it off a lot. Also be careful about your hitch that you purchase. I bought one that was supposed to fit a 2011 but didn't fit well, so do your homework. ttusomeone
If you are looking for a hitch mount rack, I would recommend the Kuat NV. It's the best one that I've found and I'm very happy with mine. Before you install a hitch, you may want to look into the SeaSucker brand bike racks. They use marine grade suction cups to attach to your vehicle. Each suction cup is rated to over 300 pounds, and I have two pairs that I use on another vehicle. I know someone else that has them and neither of us have had any problems from them. I'm not sure if your Edge has a sun roof or not, but that might be the only problem with this type of rack.
