RAINMANTOO
I ordered my 2012 FORD EDGE SPORT AWD and picked it up December 1, 2011. I recently discovered that the exhaust system from the factory is single exhaust and not true dual exhaust as I was led to believe. Is this common knowledge and I am the only one that did not know that Ford decided to change their design to a single muffler. I dont know for sure but I bet even the 3.5's have the single muffler. I am trying to find out if I can order the exhaust from a 2011 and bolt it up. My dealer just says, no there is no subsitution. I am old school and believe duals are two mufflers and two exhaust pipes. I really like my Sport and it runs good. I just want it to run as well as it can. From Vegas thanks for reading and yes it is a dry heat.

ablb
To have a true dual exhaust, you’ll probably have to go to a CUSTOM exhaust shop. They’ll have to split the exhaust at the Y pipe. A regular muffler shop might not want to build you one. It could get pretty expensive. You’ll need a second catalytic converter etc. A cat back system if not available now will be in the near future. I checked Borla and Magnaflow, neither show one for 2011 or 12. I did a search for “cat-back” and got 39 hits. ab Edited February 20, 2012 by ablb

RAINMANTOO
Is it still 2 pipes going into and out of the muffler? If so that's still dual exhaust. Doesn't matter how the mufflers are packaged. tIt is two cat converters, two exhaust pipes running to the back and then the Y connection into one and then into the muffler. Go to fordparts.com and look at the 2012 - 3.7L and you will see a diagram showing how it wasbefore. Now look up the eco 4 and you will see how one pipe goes into the center of a single muffler and it has two exhaust coming out. Ford had it right and then decided to use the same muffler on everything. If I had the 3.5 L, I would not be complaining because it was always single exhaust. Some one had posted about how they had taken off the Sports current exhaust and even showed pictures. They had a muffler shop make up duals for it. From the pictures it looked good but they were not happy with the sound and were going to purchase and reinstall the stock system because the original was pretty hacked up. Now I cant find that posting. Can someone check their 2011 and let me know what they have for exhaust. For $400 you can purchase an earlier (2011 ?) in one piece and bolt it up. Thanks for any help. The 3.7 is a V6 and the Ecoboost is a I4. The exhaust needs to be in 1 pipe to go into the turbo. But that still doesn’t answer the question of why Dingo (2011) has a true dual and you (2012) don’t. Anybody know if there is a HP/torque difference between the 10’s and 11’s? A single exhaust would be a little lighter??? ab
Fingernip
That is odd. Can you take a pic? My 2011 also has true duals.
c_bova
yeah i just looked at my 2012 and it goes from the duals to a Y and then one pipe into the muffler.
RAINMANTOO
Mine's an '11. Dingo, thank you very much and you are a lucky man. It does appear that in 2011 the Sport did have true duals and in 2012 they changed it to save some money. If someone with a 2012 - 3.5L engine could look and see if they have just one muffler I would really be interested. I am not interested in making it louder, I just want it to run good and occassionally I do like to open it up and let the ponies loose. It does run good but I am always looking for a little more. I have gotten some good information off of the site and I appreciate everyone taking the time to assist me in understanding what is going on. I am still working on a light in the glove box and a docking station for my radar detector. Any info there would be appreciated. Here is a couple pictures of my ride. c_bova
should the 2012 owners complain to ford that they have mis-lead their customers ? probably won't get us anywhere though.
akirby
should the 2012 owners complain to ford that they have mis-lead their customers ? How did Ford mislead anyone? Did they advertise dual exhaust on the 2012s? Or did you make an assumption?
c_bova
yeah it said true dual exhaust and it still says it on their site True Dual exhaust with chrome oval rolled-edge tips with two catalytic converters (Increased separated length tuned exhaust for low-end torque enhancement) http://www.ford.com/crossovers/edge/specifications/engine/ Edited February 21, 2012 by c_bova

Where mine has that little H-pipe in it, yours may have a little X-pipe with the other half in the muffler. Think about it. It's more cost efficient to stamp, weld, and roll one muffler instead of two, even if it's separated within.
c_bova
well that's what i had thought that maybe they hide that portion but it's only one pipe that goes into the muffler so if it's an x it has a long single section in the middle. i'm sure the hp is negligible if at all. just odd they would change it up. here is a picture. c_bova
after reading more on true duals, I think this merging to one is similar to the H pipe in the 2011 to equalize the pressure and then my guess is, like most have said, they split back up in the muffler. so if one were to take the muffler apart you would see the single pipe go back into a Y and then go their separate ways. is the 2012 any quieter than the 2011? something like this quick sketch...and according to what I've read this is not a "True Dual" setup.
