PhantomX
The 3.7L engine pretty much sounds like crap when you take out all the parts that keep it quiet. After about $450 wasted the truck sounds, well, eh... The problem is mostly in the mid range and under load, it just makes this awful noise, like a big fart that doesn't quit and changes pitch. I can't describe it any other way. It sounds good sitting at idle and startup, it sounds good cruising, no annoying droning or anything and under WOT it roars pretty good. It's the middle bit that just sounds, well, like ass... It's when your 1/4 throttle putting around that it just doesn't make a pretty noise in that mid 3k to 5k RPM range. It's very very high pitched and very raspy. Nothing sexy about it for sure. So far I started with just removing the big resonator. It was still pretty quiet but it made a horrid tinny, raspy, nasty sound mid throttle. So I Figured lets set it up and try to get it as deep as we can. So we did custom pipe, no res, some Flo Pro mufflers (stock tips reused) and a custom H-pipe they created. The shop did damn nice work and really made the setup look fantastic. I guess coming from a 500HP 5.0 that sounded amazing I'm a bit jaded. I love the truck but I just can't seem to make it sound right for me. To some it will sound great I'm sure but I'm not feelin' it. So tomorrow I will go back again and try have them weld in some resonators and see if that tames the raspy-ness. At this point the stock system is trashed or I would just put that back on. I'll make anyone in the tampa area with an '11 or '12 FWD Sport a helluva deal on a complete custom exhaust system just PM me... I'm thinking trade my custom for your stock and were in like Flynn... Anyway here are some pics of the work it's much more solid then the stock unit and the tips are lined up much better. Hoping the resonators cure my issue or I just wasted about $500 by the time this is done. Not the end of the world but an expensive experiment... The stock unit in case anyone was curious what it looked like:
PhantomX
FYI in case anyone was wondering if there was some performance gain to be had by doing a nice high flow exhaust like this, the answer is basically, no... Here are 2 dynolicious runs one with stock exhaust, the other with full custom setup. I didn't notice any difference at all and the numbers are pretty darn consistent. The program is too, I've run it at the track and it's pretty close to the paper slip I got from the timing shack. Here are the runs, virtually same time at night, same road, same temperature, just a little more gas tonight, I'm actually happy with the 0-60 times, I think with a tune and a good launch I can drop that to about 6.3 or so. I did have one run that clocked a 6.6 0-60 which was nice, Perfect launch with no wheel spin. Here is just the 0-60, didn't finish the run, would have been a solid 15.2 if I had: This is 2 nights ago (professional driver on a road somewhere in Mexico) This was tonight, virtually same conditions though I had about 1/4 tank more gas in it: Edited January 20, 2012 by PhantomX
RJG
Not surprised by your comments. Some of these aftermarket exhaust systems will make a few extra HP at high RPM on chassis dyno, and lose a few ft lbs Tq in low to mid range. So in a vehicle wih stock gearing, there is no real world performance improvement. Factories got it figured out pretty well for most uses. On a 500-700 HP V8 Mustang, I kinda like a nice exhaust sound also, but on a heavy Edge with low HP, I prefer quiet stock exhaust. No matter what you do to an Edge, it's not going to be a performance vehicle. Edited January 22, 2012 by RJG

I like to hear a little of the engine, give it a little character. Oh well lesson learned. Stock exhaust should be in by Friday so I'll have it installed by the weekend and back to quiet. i've had a few people listen to it and they like it but I'm stuck on the sound of a V8 if I can't get the tone i want quiet works just fine. I'll be selling the custom system if anyone is interested I'll try and get some video clips of how it sounds before I take it off...

My email is cdpratt69@gmail.com Thanks No problem. I'll make a video in the next day or so. The factory system will be here Friday so I'll make sure I get it done before then. It needs to be a 3.7 Sport because the 3.5L Exhaust is single all the way back, the Sport is duel, well until it hits the X and then singles into the big rear muffler... Then again it probably could be modified to fit with a little creativity...
PhantomX
Sent you pictures and an audio clip via email. Let me know. If you look closely at the pictures I sent you can see the factory system leaning against the wall of the garage

capsfan
For those thinking about exhaust upgrade. 2010-2012 Flex EcoBoost "Eco-Flow" Axle Back Exhaust. a bit pricey but might be worth it if the claims are true http://www.mrt-direct.com/flex.html
The Outrage
For those thinking about exhaust upgrade. 2010-2012 Flex EcoBoost "Eco-Flow" Axle Back Exhaust. a bit pricey but might be worth it if the claims are true http://www.mrt-direct.com/flex.html A turbocharger typically decreases the exhaust noise, as the exhaust must pass through the turbine. Using a similar set up on a naturally aspirated or supercharged engine would result in a louder exhaust.
