DunePearlEdge
I have an 07 edge with 58K miles. I’ve noticed the transmission had been operating slightly abnormal lately. It is beginning to over-rev and slightly shudder lately. For example: 1. When accelerating slowly (rpm peaking at 3,000) I notice that when shifting from 4th to 5th gear at about 40 mph I hear a slight vacuum sucking “whoosh” noise. This noise coincides with a quick rpm over-travel from about 2200 to 2700 after which the transmission shifts into 5th. During this “whoosh” and over-travel there is a drop in power and the vehicle hesitates (no increase in mph with the rising rpm). 2. When accelerating slightly/cruising and the stop light ¼ mile ahead changes to red, I completely slowly take my foot off the accelerator and move it to the brake pedal. When I do this, occasionally the transmission shudders sending a vibration through the car and the rpms fall quickly, feeling almost as if the transmission is “falling” out of gear. 3. When shifting from park to reverse when the vehicle is at a complete stop, such as when beginning to back out of a parking space, the transmission will occasionally exhibit a ½ second delay and “ker-chunk” sound. This sound happens after the shift lever is in the reverse position. The car is never driven hard, receives all routine maintenance, and the engine rarely travels above 3500 rpm. Does anybody have an idea as to what is causing these problems? I have taken it to the Ford dealer twice and they maintain that there are no “codes” shown and they are unable to duplicate these symptoms and therefore cannot perform any repair. The car may soon be used solely by my wife and I don’t want her to be stranded.
DunePearlEdge
Are there any thoughts on this?
wlepse
Don't know for sure but if you even mention a clunking sound I would check out the TSB for clunks....not sure if applies to your year but that would be my starting point. ablb
Then change the fluid, it's easy. ab Edited January 14, 2012 by ablb

ablb
Which fluid are you referring too? Transaxle... (Transmission) 1 11mm bolt drains about 5 quarts, 1/2 what it holds. If you want to change most of it. Go for a drive then do it again, then again to really get most of the fluid changed. We took ours in for a sever down shift at 60 mph for a pass on a 2 lane road. And a few other very random hard shifts. No codes, they can’t duplicate and I can’t either. But it will happen again. We solved the problem by buying an extended warranty . ab

ablb
Is this a Ford extended warranty? Yes But we bought it before the regular warranty ran out, got a quote from a dealer in Florida for a few hundred $’s. Took it to our dealer and asked him to meet or beat, he did. You would need to do some careful research to determine if an extended warranty (FORD) would be cost effective. ab
DunePearlEdge
My 2007 is only covered by the powertrain warranty because it has 58xxx miles. I'll have to call the dealer and ask if they offer an extended powertrain warranty.

I'll have to call the dealer and ask if they offer an extended powertrain warranty. It’s a well kept secret that the price for an extended warranties is VERY negotiable! I googled “ford extended warranty” And randomly picked this site. http://www.zeiglerfordesp.com/ I would try this or another ford dealer on the internet BEFORE visiting your dealer! Then don’t get upset just hand them your quote from the internet dealer and ask if they can meet or beat it. If they can’t then walk, you’ve already got a GOOD offer that will be honored by any Ford dealer, even yours. ab

I have this same thing happen to me...my car has 70K on it now (which means the warranty is up). Did you ever find out the solution? Sometimes the tranny clunks, but not very often. I should've purchased an ESW, but I might trade it in.
LukeKondratowicz
I have a 08 with about 140,000Km on it and it is experiencing the same issues, I was wondering if any one was able to find out either from a dealer or from personal experience of what the problem might be. I am suspecting a shift solenoid. but its strictly speculation at this time.
CET999
Hi, I might be late in this reply, but I thought I would share this information. 1. Ford recommends tranny fluid and filter change every 48000 mi. 2. Changing the fluid yourself can be done, but there is a side note. 3. Changing the filter yourself (and gasket) will be a challenge of patience and requires good tools and dexterity (filter is in vertical housing on side of tranny with little space to work). 4. Changing the fluid once you notice minor malfunctions in the shifting or in OD will prevent minor becoming major. 5. that side note -- you need to flush ALL the old oil out (takes about 12 liters/us qts to do this) -- drain oil --replace plug - fill tranny - run engine shift between R to D holding at 20 seconds in each - do this for 3 minutes. Repeat this until all the new oil has been added. 6. Make sure you use the correct type of fluid!!!!. 7. Add a tranny conditioning oil at the end of the drain cycle. 8. Make sure the oil on the dip stick DOES NOT got into the overfill position!!! (and is above the add mark) 9. drive is for a day and check level again when hot. Personal Experiences on my 2007 Edge 3.5V6 AWD and with FORD (who like our money to do major repairs). I change engine oil and filter every 5000k and change tranny oil every 50,000k (or sooner if I notice hickups in the shifting) - filter only got changed by FORD a 100000k ($100labor, $35 filter and gasket, 2qts fluid) Ford Dealer did not like me when I requested filter only change. Ford charges $400+ for full change. Spark Plugs are my next venture I am at 101,000K - to maintain great MPG.
