SaraMocke
Hi, It seems to occur at random. Sometimes when I use my key fob or the button in the trunk to close the power liftgate, it closes right up until the point it's about to lock and then reopens. It seems to be a two step process of first closing, and then within about a second the door gets locked. It's at that point it just opens again. It's acting like there is an obstruction, despite there not being one at all. It happens at random. I've tried to see if there is any rhyme or reason but I can't peg down any external factors that are causing it. If I shut it myself (pulling it down and closing it manually) it closes quite happily, and then it locks as I would expect, but no matter how many times I try to close it automatically it just will not work. It seems like some buggy sensor or software, because it works most of the time and there are no obstructions at all. Is anyone having this trouble? More often than note it works as expected, but now I constantly have to stand there like an idiot watching it to be sure it closes. It happens just enough to be very annoying! I have a 2012 Edge SEL, which I love, in case that's necessary to know
Ribbit
This has happened a few times with my new 2012 also. Approximately 1 out of 4 times, the gate will re-open after it comes down. No obstructions. Then it works on the 2nd try. I haven't really looked into it that much yet (aside from just looking on this forum) but I'm hoping it's just a matter of adjusting some sort of bumper. choff1138
If you start the car before it is fully closed, it will open back up.
igcitng
My new 2012 gave me problems also. Originally I thought it was sensing me to the side of the car as I walked away but now I think it was the rubber around the edges of the opening and it just needed to break in, seems to be fine now. cv27
My new 2012 gave me problems also. Originally I thought it was sensing me to the side of the car as I walked away but now I think it was the rubber around the edges of the opening and it just needed to break in, seems to be fine now. Used to happen to me quite often on my 2008 Limited Edge; quite annoying thinking all is closed and locked but coming back after shopping and realizing your Edge had a big sign saying"steal anything you wish". It has happened a few times (1-2) on my 2011 Limited Edge. Dealert says there is no trouble log entry so he's clueless.
jeffdelta
Have same issue with my 2012 Limited. I feel stupid watching the door close to make sure it stays closed. First it happened when my car was parked on an incline and thought there may be some sensor that detects the incline and wont close. However, it also happens when level. I agree that it happens around 1 out of every 4 or 5 times. Had my car since October this year.
JOEHIO
My month old MKX does the same thing. Not that often, but when it does, it closes to the first clcik, and when it works, you hear the second click, and it closes completely, BUT, sometimes after the first click, it opens back up. No obstructions, and temperature makes no difference, could be 28 degrees or 55, doesn;t matter. Will be taking it in to get checked out, service tech said they might have to make some kind of adjustment.
Ranger
Apparently this is a common occurence. My 2012 Limited with 300 miles on it has had this happen three times in the past two weeks. I always check for an obstruction, but have never found one. Like everyone else, I'll have to mention it to the Dealer whn I take it in for it's first checkup.
wilsons66604
If you start the car before it is fully closed, it will open back up. That may explain why I have the gate open before I pull away. I was thinking I bumped the fob while getting in the car.
Scorpio
I don't recall the details, but there was an earlier recall from Ford for defective liftgate locking modules - may be worth looking into.
The Outrage
I've had the same problems with my 2012 model. I'm hoping it's a matter of breaking in the seal.
jmbreeze23
This also is happening to me, tonight actually. I have a 2012 Limited. Tonight, I got out stuff out of the back, hit the button in the back left cargo area, stepped back and over to the left, only to watch it come down, almost latch and lift back up. So, I repeated same process, only this time, stepped straight back from the lift gate, and it went down and back up. Said a few curse words, and then the 3rd time, used the key fob and it went down and stayed latched. It happened over the holiday. I was showing some family members how it worked and that this was a feature I wanted, and it did it then too! How embarassing. It did it right after I first got the car too. I thought it was user error, but now I know it isn't. It also did it to me several other times/places. It's one thing if it happens in my driveway at home, but being out and about at night/public areas, I gotta stand around and make sure it's going to latch before walking away. Not very safe. I have about 1200 miles on it and will be asking the dealer about it when I get an oil change at 5k.
NWS Alpine
I have had issues with mine too. Random fits where it takes 4-5 times to finally latch. One time last week it was dead and wouldn't move. None of the buttons or remote would make it move. Closed it and a few days later is making noises like the lift is struggling to open and close the liftgate. Will have to have it fixed next time I am in. JOEHIO
The service dept at my dealership told me that for the '12's, the program for the rear liftgate is being rerwritten, to correct the problem. If your Edge/MKX is a '11 or older, then it's replacing the rear gasket.
fastman
FYI - Another 2012 Edge Limited here having the same power liftgate problem where it randomly takes a few tries before it stays closed. igcitng
ANYONE get this PROBLEM resolved ? Mine is working great now, no problems so I'm convinced mine just needed to break in. I use it a lot.
JOEHIO
I guess I'll have to open and close mine every day, and see what happens after another month or so. Edited January 13, 2012 by JOEHIO
Superdave
I guess I'll have to open and close mine every day, and see what happens after another month or so. Just bought my edge ecoboost last week and gate would do this too, a lot! The dealer has had it twice now and replaced the closing mechanism. It works better but still doing it. My ford touch system shut down too and needed some sort of update. I'm upset because I really like this car but the rear gate should work all the time. I'm contemplating turning the car back to them. Superdave
Update. Taking it back again tomorrow. Ford dealer says they know how to fix this time. This is the third trip to dealer and have had the car for only two weeks. On a good note, just got back from trip to Cambria Pines. I got 26 mpg. Not too shabby for doing average 70 mph with a full car of people and luggage. The ecoboost is smooth, quiet and fun to drive. For a "CUV" this is good mileage. JOEHIO
Let us know what your dealer does to fix this. The past 3 days, mine has been working okay, even opened and closed it about 6 or 7 times. Maybe it did need breaking in, I don't know. My mpg's have been pretty decent, too. Taking it easy, I have no problem obtaining 18+ in town, and have hit 26 mpg highway, and I only have 1,300 miles on it . Sync did a system maintenance yesterday pulling into the parking lot at church, will have to see how things go, but so far, no major problems, and voice commands working okay, too. fastman
A friend of mine works at a Lincoln dealer. He says he spoke with his master technician and he said there was nothing published on our technician website pertaining to the 2012 MKX (Edge) powerlift gate issue. He said on the older ones there was issues with latches causing the problem. He suggested to bring into dealer so they can scan for codes stored in the vehicles computer. JOEHIO
Well, yesterday the rear gate worked fine, was in the 20's, today it took multiple times to close it, and the temp wqas in the upper 40's so it's not temperature related. Since owning it, some days it worked when we had warmer outside temps, an some days wqas the opposite - go figure, just find a fix for this please ! Superdave
Back from dealer yesterday. They moved latch to forward most position and said their engineers are aware of problem but do not have a fix yet. It hasn't had the problem today so we will report back to dealer if it happens again. Pretty frustrating. So to recap, been to dealer three times now for same problem. They replaced the entire latch mechanism on second visit and moved the latch to full forward adjustment yesterday on third visit. They finally got confirmation through Oasis there is a known issue with the power gate. The service writer told me he will call me when he has update from Ford. Today it's working fine. I really love this car and really hope this can be fixed. Edited January 19, 2012 by Superdave
