wlepse
I currently have a 320GB USB drive with about 60GB of music in the Edge that seems to be working fine, except for the occasional "usb device not recognized" message from MFT. But I am concerned about the long term durability of a standard drive with the temp extremes. I was thinking about doing a flash drive but 64GB drives are rediculously priced. Since there have been a ton of 32GB drives selling cheap lately I was wondering if I could get a cheap USB hub and plug a couple of flash drives in. But I am not sure if the car will see all the drives simultaneously or if I would need to pick which drive I want to use. Does anyone have experience with multiple USB devies? When you go to browse do you see all artists or just the ones on a particular flash drive? Either way I was going to use the extra USB connector on the APIM and hide all of this in the center console.
Dingo
You can use 2 devices. It labels them USB1 and USB2. Browse only goes through whichever source you have active at that time.
wlepse
Really...I thought I read somewhere here that there are two USB connectors on the APIM but only one is connected and the other connection was USB2?? I did a search for a RAID USB device but it only seems to be possible with software nothing hardware based. So I guess I'll stick with my external drive and when it craps out maybe the prices of 64GB flash drives will be reasonable or I'll get an SSD. Dingo
The external drive I bought is supposedly everythingproof.
4havnfun
Shortly after I started dealing with MFT I was trying to browse music on my iPod and at one point MFT thought I had more than 2 USB devices connected. I didn't and it hasn't done it since but this leads me to believe that if you tried a USB hub it would probably work.
Dingo
I would try, but I have no hub.
wlepse
I only have powered hubs right now, but I'll check with my co-worker he might have something. He might even be able to add something on the USB RAID setup....as I was searching this out I found a tech article on his site. But if I can't find it easily it will likely be big $ and I would be better off just replacing hard drives when/if they go bad.

wilsons66604
This is cool! I would venture to guess that MyFordTouch will eventually explode while trying to index and "building commands" Is it working OK for you?
wlepse
OH HELL YES! Is the 6864 the total count on songs between the two USB drives? And just to clariy you have both USB drives connected in the console? If you go to browse does it only show you artists and albums for the current USB? What about voice commands; if you ask for an artist that is on another USB can it find it? If the indexing does span the multiple devices to essentially make them one that would be awesome. Then the only issue I would have is to figure out how to do file maintenance on them. I was going to mess with this today so thanks for saving me the trouble of sitting out in the cold. Dingo
wlepse, they're all separate. It treats each as a different source. wilsons, good catch.
