ChrisThomsen
I been driving my new 2011 Edge SEL for three weeks now. I'm still getting used to a lot of the features and amenities. One thing that I've noticed is the audio quality. It sounds like it playing underwater. The music sounds muffled. This happens both on FM radio and Sirius. Anyone else have this problem as well? Thoughts on how to improve audio sound quality?

Thoughts on how to improve audio sound quality? Best place to start is with swapping out the speakers in the doors with a decent set as they are about as cheap a speaker as you can get. I replaced mine with Polk MM571's and there was a noticeable improvement in the sound quality. Once you do that, you can start to consider amps, equalizers, or more. I'll start with the speakers. I'm not looking for a top notch audio system, just a cleaner sound.
Mazz
I installed a set of Polks in my wife's 2012 Focus. The difference was dramatic. Huge improvement.
fishx65
Just did this myself with a set of Infinitys. I liked how the Infinity tweeter is on a swivel base and can be aimed. The sound difference is night and day!!
NordicHorde
Sounds good, I've been having the same complaint about audio quality.
fishx65
Sounds good, I've been having the same complaint about audio quality. You guys will understand why the 2011 stereo system sounds so bad when you get your hands on the factory speakers. Never seen anything like them!!!! Gimp
Thanks to this discussion I decided to go ahead and order four Polk speakers yesterday. My 2012 Edge SEL was just built and doesn't even arrive at the dealership until next week. I know that the bad speakers will just distract me from the positive driving experience that I'm looking forward to so speaker installation will be the second thing I do after I take delivery - just after I install the NuShield screen protection. fishx65
Make sure to let us know if Ford is still using the plastic speakers in the 2012's.

Thoughts on how to improve audio sound quality? The muffled sound you're hearing may not be the speakers or the system itself. It could be sound artifacts that come from compressing a digital audio signal. I've noticed that several local FM stations sound pretty awful when I have HD (digital) radio turned on. The compression artifacts are even more prominent on Sirius stations. I can't even listen to most music on Sirius because it sounds so bad to me. To see if the poor sound you're hearing is due to compression try putting in an actual real CD (not one you made on the computer) and listen to that for a little while. If the poor sound goes away, replacing speakers isn't going to help at all.
Gimp
Make sure to let us know if Ford is still using the plastic speakers in the 2012's. I picked up my vehicle today. It was immediately obvious that the speakers sounded very muffled. The first thing I did was to change the rear speakers. There is now a huge improvement in the quality of the sound. I hope to get the front speakers swapped out tomorrow. I don't know if I would describe the speakers as "plastic", but they do have a plastic protective cover on them. Due to the plastic, I can't really see what kind of material the cones are made of. BTW, each door speaker swap took about 10 minutes from start to finish. The Polk speakers were an exact match for three out of the four existing screw holes which was good enough to attach them quite firmly with no need to do any drilling.
