My 2011’s interior is whistling

Recommended Posts

My 2011 Edge has a high pitch whistle emanating from near the rear passenger’s door lock stalk. The pitch of the whistle changes with the climate control’s blower speed setting. If I open the door – no whistle, crack the window – no whistle, set climate control to recirculate air – no whistle. It’ll do this whether the car is moving or parked. So I think air is either being sucked-in or forced out through the exterior door handle opening. I’ll have it looked at during the first dealer service, but has anyone heard of this problem?

Hi Weezer, did you get this resolved?

Something similar is happening with my vehicle this morning. You mentioned the rear door but I'm not sure exactly where the noise is coming from, thought it was more from the dashboard area and seems to get louder the faster you go.

Looks like another visit to the dealer

Thanks

No, I have not had it into the dealer yet – still waiting to hit 5k miles before taking it in.

Your issue sounds different from mine, in that mine has nothing to do with the car’s speed, but just the blower’s setting. I can’t hear it from the driver’s seat. I wouldn’t even know about it except a passenger sitting in the rear seat mentioned it.

I hope the dealer can resolve both of our issues.

Regards

Weezer, to me it sounds like you've got a cabin pressure seal leaking. the whistle is more than likely due to the pressure created inside the cabin with the HVAC system pumping air in and a seal on that rear door being loose, torn, or just blown. just my .02

Letstryaford, take a look at this:

TSB

  • WHISTLE NOISE FROM LEFT HAND SIDE EXTERIOR MIRROR WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OVER 64 KM/H (40 MPH) - BUILT ON OR BETWEEN 7/12/2010 - 12/22/2010

Publication Date: February 18, 2011

FORD:2010-2011 EdgeLINCOLN:2010-2011 MKX

ISSUE:

Some 2010-2011 Edge and MKX vehicles built on or between 7/12/2010 and 12/22/2010 may exhibit a wind whistle noise from the left hand (LH) side exterior mirror while driving at speeds over 64 Km/h (40 MPH).

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the LH side exterior mirror from the vehicle. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-09.
  2. Carefully remove the mirror mounting base gasket from the mirror housing.
  3. Locate the small access cover under the mirror neck. (Figure 1)

    tb10101a.gif
    Figure 1 - Article 11-2-13
  4. Carefully place a flat blade screw driver under the wire harness through the routing path in the inner base as shown below. (Figure 2)

    tb10102a.gif
    Figure 2 - Article 11-2-13
  5. Carefully pry up on the screw driver, thus pushing down on the access cover, causing the access cover to pop off. (Figure 3)

    tb10103a.gif
    Figure 3 - Article 11-2-13
  6. Using a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and water clean the non-textured side of the access cover.
  7. From the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Kit (part number 164-R4900) select one PCV soft foam tape strip (part number 164-R4901).
    1. Cut the foam tape strip to a size 10 mm (3/8") wide x 50 mm (1 31/32") long and apply it to the non-textured side of the access cover. (Figure 4)

      tb10104a.gif
      Figure 4 - Article 11-2-13
    2. Make sure the foam tape overlaps the edge of the access cover at least 5 mm (3/16"). (Figure 5)

      tb10105a.gif
      Figure 5 - Article 11-2-13
    3. The overlap ensures the gap between the access cover and mirror housing is sealed when the cover is installed.

[*]Reinstall the access cover.

  1. The cover should sit slightly recessed to the mirror housing when fully installed. The added foam tape should not be visible and should overlap the gap between the cover and housing when installed.

[*]Reinstall the mirror mounting base gasket to the mirror housing.[*]Install the LH mirror assembly. Refer WSM, Section 501-09.

Thanks Rob, I’ll pass that on when I take it into the dealer. I haven’t been too motivated to take it to the dealer since it’s the only issue I have with the car – other than an occasional psychotic event with MFT.
