ELation
I was working in my garage and my father was in his 2012 MKX getting used to the features. Then I noticed this high pitch noise around me and thought someone's fire alarm was going off. So I walked to the street to see which house, but the noise went away. Came back to the garage and I heard the noise again. Moments later I realized it was coming from the car. When accessory/power is on while engine is not running, the car was making this noise. Very annoying if you want to have a radio on and wax the car or something, or someone in the car while you are working in the garage. Anyone know why this is happening? I asked a friend with 2011 Edge and it does the same thing.
jak508
It could be the fuel pump being energized with the accessory/power being on. Ford/Lincoln Edge/MKX are notorious for noisy fuel pumps. My 2007 MKX was very noisy especially with a full tank of gas. My 2010, the noise is probably 50% quieter. Can't say why. cal3thousand
Yeah, it's the Fuel Pump and yeah, it's annoying as all hell. Dealer will say they don't hear it or you're crazy...
ELation
That is very weird. My 98 Honda only makes the noise for about 1 second and it's more like "Pshhhhhh".
Dingo
Mine doesn't do it.
Weezer
Mine does it as well. When I asked the salesman, he said it was the HID ballast.
ELation
HID ballasts do make similar noise, but not as annoying.
cal3thousand
HID ballasts do make similar noise, but not as annoying. Nor anywhere as loud. I have to put my head next to HID ballasts to hear them. I can hear this noise from about 20 feet away if my car is parked in the carport. jst333
Is it by chance coming from the subwoofer in the rear? The reason I ask, is because I had a high pitch whine coming out of the rear factory subwoofer. I was able to verify this, because I dropped in an aftermarket sub and amp. I tapped the high level signals coming out of the factory sub amp and ran them to the new amp. At first i could still hear a high pitch whine, but then i switch the amp crossover to Low pass, Instantly the noise was gone. Switching the crossover back high pass and the whine came back. hope this helps.

ELation
and you don't hear it inside of the car. Only when you are standing side or in front of the vehicle. Edited October 13, 2011 by ELation
timoconn
This happens when the ignition is turned off and the vehicular is not in park.
Scorpio
With the IA key, I can hear the fuel pump engergize (slight whine) when I'm near the car, but it definitely doesn't rival a fire alarm. If it's that loud, I'd have it checked out by the dealer.
randyf
I have an 11 Sport & it makes the same high pitched sound. Not the HID, since mine doesn't have it
