forthvacav
I will be picking up my new 2011 Ford Edge in the morning SEL model. Tried to purchase the factory HID kit offered by Ford but would have had move up to the Limited model and get the 302A package which would have added about alot more money to the price of the SUV, salesman suggested buying a aftermarket kit. So here I am, I have read the post on this site and have gotten an idea but would like others opinion. There seems to be some concern over the bulb number and etc. So all information regarding this modification tricks for installation and problems would be greatly appreciated. wlepse
There doesn't really seem to be a consensus on this and I doubt there ever will be. Retro solutions offers a kit with what the call a Ford specific harness. I have inquired here about what the harness includes and it definitely has a relay like all aftermarket harnesses but some say it also has a capacitor. If you go for a kit I suggest you do get a harness as Ford uses a pulsed voltage that can wreck havoc on the ballasts. The capacitor could help smooth these spikes but if you run off a harness the ballasts will derive power directly from the battery so it shouldn't be needed. The OEM bulbs are 9012 but the 9006 kits fit in this socket too. As for a vendor...that is where things get tough. You will hear horror stories about everyone of them if you look hard enough. Honestly I don't know how much it matters since they are all likely to be Chinese made, so you can get some good kits and some bad since the quality control is suspect. For that reason I will likely go back to DDM Tuning since the prices are pretty good (starts at $35) and my other kits from them were still working fine after 3 years. One was a 55W the other a 35W, neither had a harness. I did have an occasion bulb that wouldn't fire which was annoying but I think a harness would have helped that. ELation
Typically, HID lights don't work properly in halogen housing. The projector inside the stock non- HID housing is designed for halogen bulb. Since halogen and HID bulb have different focal points, aftermarket HID bulbs usually perform poorly in halogen projector( worse in halogen reflector). The light might bleed out and cause glare to oncoming drivers. Quality afttermarket kits with Hella/ Philips components ( OEM HID suppliers) was $600-700 with proper harness 5 years ago. I can't believe some kits cost under $50 now. And stay with 4,100-4,500K range in bulb temperature. You'll get the brightest lights.
