9012 to 9011 (2011 headlights)

Recommended Posts

No one has tried this yet???? I just took a night run up to my Northern Michigan cabin for a few days and the factory 9012's are really weak. Since these projectors just use a flap for the brights they just go a little higher but don't get any brighter. After a little snooping around I found out that most autoparts stores can get AC Delco 9011's. 40 bucks each!!!!

I'm just not sure if the little projectors can handle a little extra heat.

I have a set of 9011's from my old car I was going to try but I don't think it will happen this weekend with the hurricane coming. They should have 30% more light output but I am concerned that the extra 10W may be an issue and I found these bulbs to make a lot of glare in the last car. The light was fantastic up until you got to a new street sign then it made the sign almost seem light it was lighted. It is a little distracting.

Please let me know if you try them out or compare the bases to see how they need to be modded to fit. I might go ahead and order a set of the 9011 Toshibas that are still floating around. I was even looking at adding a set of PIAA's that I have laying around but I'm sure they would look a little funky on the front of an Edge. There is just no place to mount an extra set of lights on this thing! I did see that KC makes a cool little lightbar for the 2010 and below Edge. It's really small and sits at the bottom of the grill.

The glare should not be a problem with these projectors as long as the focal length of the 9011 is similar to the 9012.

I don't have the specs in front of me to compare though.

By glare I wasn't referring to misdirected light out of the projector but feedback off reflective signs. I don't know if it is the wavelength of light or the intensity but these bulbs really tend to make sings difficult to read since they seem like they are glowing.

But with that said I installed one in the passenger side and don't see much of a difference. I will report back after I get more night time driving but I don't see much of a difference and getting it in there wasn't easy. You have to modify the tabs which is easy but you also have to remove the key in the connector to get it hooked up. Not terrible but not worth the time for what I am seeing and the $50 bucks for bulbs. But again these bulbs are 2 years old so they may have lost some power, but they were highs so they didn't get used much. Again I will update after I get some more drive time.

Thanks wlepse! Please do let me know if you see a big difference at night. The increase should be about 650 lumens from the 9012 to 9011. I switched out the h11's for H9's on the low beams of my 2010 Edge, which is about a 750 lumen increase, and I could really notice a big difference. Maybe your 9011's are not that bright compared to the Toshiba 9011's or maybe an increase in lumens does not show as well in projector style lights. Wish I knew!

Ok so after a bit of night driving I can say there is little difference if any. The HIR's I have are Toshiba's from Candlepower. I did a little reading around and it seems that these bulbs are no longer made int he same facility and shortly after I purchased them they moved production to the PRC and quality suffered. I also read that the specs on these bulbs is +/- 15% for both HIR and HIR2, so if I happen to have pretty bright HIR2's and dim HIR's they may seem equivalent. I tried to get some pictures but with a point and shoot it is next to impossible to get a good shot.
