Edge Sport or Limited? 2011 or 2012?

I cannot decide between the Edge Sport or Limited. I want the Sport due to the suspension package and black grill and stronger engine. I don' like the shiny grill on LTD and I am concerned about the 22" tires of the Sport (e.g., more expensive to replace plus crapper ride and crapper in the snow). I like the 3.7 compared to the 3.5 but according to some other sites the 3.5 is faster. Oh and since I live in Minnesota, I need/want all wheel drive.

The 22s look nice but aren't as practical in the snow and I would be fine with 20s but I can only get 22s on the Sport. What is the difference between the lights and the tail lamps between the Sport and LTD? I can't see difference like commented on some websites.

Also is it worth it to wait until next month or so to get the 2012? Online, I can't find any changes. If there are upgrades or changes, I am willing to wait the couple of months. So going back to the 3.5 or 3.7, I understand the weighted wheels and AWD on the Sport makes more of a drag even with the extra hp.

SO which one? Sport or Limited? PS I will have mine loaded up regardless.

Good questions.

I stuck with the Limited for several reasons. (These were all personal reasons)

1) MPG. 1 mile might not be much to some people, but for some reason it made a difference in my head. And if you get AWD, you're already coughing up 1 MPG.

2) Performance. Yes, the Sport is slower due to the Behemoth 22s. Don't get me wrong, they look amazing and if I could afford a second set of show-off rims, I would opt for some. My analogy is a Maria Sharipova vs a Pam Anderson. You'll get LOTS of looks either way, but Pam will get more double takes at the beach. But take them both to the an athletic outing and you'll see where the Big Guns can get in the way.

3) Ride. The ride of 22's will be a "bit" less comfortable, even with the highly tuned suspension bits.

4) I wanted the Driver's Entry Package.

What I wanted and had to do without:

1) 3.7 L Mustang engine (It just has a nice ring to it; Saying you got a Mustang V6 with 300 ponies has got to be a smile maker)

2) Sport body pieces ( The matched body pieces look amazing [ I think an aftermarket solution will be available eventually])

3) 22" wheels look amazing.

4) Blacked out grille

I loved the idea of the blacked out grille, but wanted to be a bit different, so I wrapped it in black vinyl (DIY, never wrapped anything previously)

As far as Model Year goes, you're in the position to get the better vehicle, so I would suggest waiting. There's some changes in the 2012 that I would like on my car including the extra baffling in the D pillars for extra quieting and the turn signal mirrors like the Explorer.

In the end, it's up to what you value between all these differences. Good luck with your choice and welcome!

I opted for the Limited for a few reasons...

18" AWD for practicality.

Tow package not available on Sport & I thought it would be stupid to not get it. You never know when you need to tow something. Starting in '11, the tow hitch uses the standard 2" receiver.

HID headlights not available on Sport and I HAD to have the HIDs. They are great. You can never have too much light.

Diver's entry is a must. I didn't realize it wasn't available on the Sport.

I like the black grille but I've grown to really like the chrome grille. It reminds me of the 1950 Ford truck. A replaceable grill insert is available for a reasonable price. One guy on the forum got one painted blue to match his Edge.

I don't have a garage but learned that the Sport does not have the Homelink garage door openers. That may make a difference to you.

As far as 11 v 12, I would bet you could get a new 11 for much less. Don't expect the '12 to have a better MyFordTouch system than the '11

I have a White Sport (fully loaded except for the cargo package) and it is totally amazing!!! Go with the sport because those 22 inch rims are surprisingly very smooth. I don't feel any bumps in the road that I used to feel in my 08 Edge (which had 18 inch rims). Plus the Sport looks different and will get you a lot of compliments. Yea the limited has HIDs and that is the only option that I wanted, but the Sport is totally worth it. By the way, even though the Sport might "be slower with a bigger engine," this baby has some power and its exhaust sound better than the other models. And do wait for the 2012, I really wanted LED turn indicators on my mirrors and they are totally worth it, in my opinion. Hope this helps

Thanks for all the advice. I just took a spin in an Edge Limited yesterday to reconfirm my choice since I can choose any Ford as my company car. Apparently, none of the dealers have the Sport for me to take a look at. So I was reading in my brochure and Manny2525 is right about the HID lights which is Retarded that the one with the most upgrades don't offer everything! After having my past 4 vehicles with HID/Xenon lights, it will be hard to switch back. I get reminded how bad regular headlights are when I get my rental cars. I see though that the Edge copied a lot of Vovlo features such as the steering wheel, waterfall HVAC, front lower white lights. I also noticed on the Edges without the sync has a similar looking Landrover HVAC.

I am still at a toss up since I like the looks of the Sport, but I like the loaded features of the Limited. I have decided that I can't wait until late Sept or OCT to see the 2012 because who knows what date my 2012 Edge would actually arrrive. I'm thinking if I get the Sport it will be all black and if I get the Limited it will be Silver to match the grill. One bad thing with the silver shiny grill is that Cops and see it a mile away to use the laser dot.

Apparently, this didn't work so let me try again.

Can someone clarify if the Driver's Entry Package comes in the Sport? Because according to the 2011 Edge Brochure is says that it does as an option.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, Driver's Entry Package is available as an option on the 2011 Sport. I'd assume that it will be available on the 2012 Sport as well.

Consider a black limited. It will help to hide the black plastic body parts and the black vista roof.

The Bi Halogen projector on the Sport does a decent job with HID kits. +1 for the Sport

Also forgot the Special leather seats are a nice plus and the lack of the fake wood is nice too. +1 for the Sport

And apparently you can get the Driver Package with the Sport. Guess I was wrong.

Don't forget to take a look at the Tow Package on the Limited as pointed out by Wilson.

I went with the Sport. For me it was all about looks. It's an AWD SUV. I've got a sports car to speed in, not that the Sport is any Slouch, far from it. The finished lower body panels really finish off this truck. Parked next to a regular Edge with the un painted body panels it looks like a completely different truck. I've been asked more times than I can remember if "Those wheels are stock". They really stand out. The ride? The ride is awesome! My sport on 22's rides as nice as my wife's 2011 Explorer on 18's. Handling is superb for a 4200 lb truck. Paddle shifters?!!!!! INSANE!!!!! Yea I wanted HID's, so you know what? I put them on aftermarket for $45 and they work beautifully. Driver entry? Had to have it, and got it. Actually my Sport came with everything but headrest DVD players. After having a 2008 platinum white limited with 20's, i drove the 11 Sport and bought it the next day.

You'll be happy with either one I'm sure, but weigh what's more important to you. 0-60 times? A sporty suspension that makes this vehicle feel like a sports sedan instead of a heavy SUV? Don't mind the lower cladding black vs painted? For me, if the Sport wasn't available or wasn't available in white I would have been looking at different trucks. It just turned out to be the whole package for me.

I went with the Sport and absolutely love it. I had to sacrifice HIDs, and aftermarket HIDs are illegal in Louisiana, so that's not an option for me. But the regular lights aren't too bad. I also added my own HomeLink garage door opener, since it doesn't come with it.

In my opinion, the look of the Sport is worth it. When I park somewhere and walk away, I still turn around just to look at those beautiful 22s and that contrasting black grill (I have the white Sport).

Also, regarding the performance numbers of the Sport versus the standard 3.5L models, every review or test I read tested a front wheel drive limited versus an all wheel drive Sport. The all wheel drive system adds a significant amount of weight and friction which will have an impact on performance. MotorTrend rates the FWD Edge SEL at 15.7 quarter mile while Consumer Reports rates the AWD SEL at 16.6. There is some variation between the companies that do the testing, since MotorTrend rates the AWD Sport at 15.9 while Car and Driver says 15.4. Anyway, my point is that if you test an AWD Limited against an AWD Sport, I think the Sport will be ahead. I think the extra horsepower, torque, and displacement more than make up for the extra weight/diameter of the wheel and tire.

Living in the south where it snows about once a decade, I have the FWD sport. I have yet to take it to a track to see what it will run, but my brother challenged me in his Honda Accord coupe. The Accord runs a 15.33 in the quarter mile, and my FWD Sport was a car length ahead when I let off at 70 mph.

The paddle shifters on the Sport is also a really nice plus.

They're illegal everywhere. It's a DOT thing, not a LA thing.

Well I don't know what's up with Louisiana, because they are extremely popular. Lots of people have them, and the government/police didn't seem to mind. Our governor just signed a bill that outlawed them and allows police to pull you over and ticket you for them, and it takes effect next week. Maybe they're just starting to enforce it; I'm not sure. But I know that until now HIDs were fine in the state of Louisiana.

They're typically ignored everywhere just like other popular but not DOT legal mods like smoked headlamps and taillamps and wiring fogs to stay on with brights.

My guess is some lawmaker had a problem and decided to make it a state law.

I don't see how they will pull you over in an Edge since the base Halogen lights are also constructed with Low/High projectors. I think that legislation would be more apt to apprehending drivers that put HID kits into reflector based housings.

So I test drove the Edge Sport this weekend. I wasn't too impressed with the performance. I thought the Sport Suspension would be tighter and the engine would feel stronger but there wasn't a noticeable difference; if any. I did notice a little wind notice on the interstate and also the ride with the 22s were slightly harsher. I do like the looks way better than the ltd.

Not to sound too snobbish, but I wonder if some of the people in these forums had a hunk of junk prior to the edge? Because any upgrade would make the Edge seem Awesome (for example, a person drove a 2002 Explorer but then got a new 2011 Edge). The point I'm trying t make is if you dove a X5 or any other high-end brand, you know what the standard is to compare to.

Just a thought.

I don't think the police would bother to pull you over at all unless you blinded them with your oncoming lights.

It's illegal in GA to drive in the rain without headlamps, but I've never seen or heard of anyone getting pulled over or getting a ticket. That a lot more dangerous than some of the other stuff they do pull you over for.

Considering the cheapest X5 stickers at $47K ($57K for the Sport) while the Edge Sport starts at $37K, I would hope it performs a lot better.

I went from a completely stripped down manual 99 escort that only cost 10k brand new - so yes - it is a huge improvement and a completely different car. If you are looking for a high end luxury car - stay with those brands and those prices.
