Will USB key work for music in cold weather? What about SD Nav?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was just about to go to the store to pick up a USB flash drive for my week old Edge and noticed the one I wanted has an operating temperature of 0C (32F) and above. This is very disappointing since the Edge Limited only comes with 1 CD slot which is incompatible with many WMA files (the USB reader has no problem with them). While it's not winter now, it will be eventually so I'm worried my plans for putting all my music on USB are pointless. I don't want to have to wait around for my car to warm up before listening to music, or unplug the usb key all the time.

Does anyone have experience using a USB key for music in cold and extremely cold weather? (0C to -40C, or 32F to -40F).

I know the vehicle and stereo itself must have military or aviation grade electronics since it all works well below freezing, so I'm not sure why a solid state USB key wouldn't work.

I'm also curious if my Nav system based on an SD card will have the same limitation in cold weather?

Sadly I keep finding things out about the vehicle that I don't like - for example, even with the volume very low the vehicle vibrates noticeably from the speakers. The doors and even the steering wheels vibrate like the speakers have no cushioning on them. My 2000 Explorer also had a premium sound system, but it didn't vibrate at all with the sound on, even if it was very loud)

Thanks

I leave my OLD hard drive based iPod plugged into the car all the time. No issues with it since I took delivery last sept. In Kansas, it not only gets cold but it also gets HOT. My SD based nav doesn't seem to have a problem on temp.

I'm pretty sure a USB drive will be OK.

On the speakers, Take your ride to the dealership. Sounds like a speaker is "blown".

I think the operating temperature specified on a USB drive is the optimal temperature range to get the maximum amount of life out of it. I'm sure it will work just fine in cold weather. Maybe the overall life of the drive will be shortened by a little bit, but they're so cheap I don't think it matters too much.

I haven't had problems with mine yet and it's been through one very cold winter here.
