Robert Burke
I read somewhere in the Ford Edge manual about regenerative power when coasting downhill? Any info on this??? Does it charge up the battery?
cal3thousand
I read somewhere in the Ford Edge manual about regenerative power when coasting downhill? Any info on this??? Does it charge up the battery? You get fuel cut to the injectors when coasting downhill. Which doesn't regenerate your power, it just fully utilizes the potential energy you put into the hill. To have regenerative braking, you would need some type of electric motor to act as a generator. Maybe this would be possible with smart alternators in the future. I know BMW has clutched alternators and regenerative brakes on the M3 and newer 5 series. Edited June 20, 2011 by cal3thousand
Frisco1522
It almost feels to me that when I have Cruise on, if I'm going downhill that it does something to limit the speed to what I set it. Almost like downshifting. Wonder if that's what they are talking about?

Since that last post in June, I have learned that the alternator in our cars is indeed a "smart alternator" that increases load in certain situations to regenerate more power to the battery. Combined with the fuel cut to the injectors, this will help save fuel.
