donval
Has anybody come up with an acceptable cargo cover for the Edge (camel interior) so we can carry our suitcases safely on long trips? The window tint is not dark enough to hide the contents of the cargo area.

GrandpaJohn
Ford Accessories part number - 7T4Z-7845440-AC - but there is no picture to see what it looks like - $ 125 Don't buy Ford's cargo cover. I did and brought it back. They want you to drill holes in your brand new car to install a plastic hook to hold the back of the cover up. Then you have to hold the front of it up by placing loops over the three headrests. That means you can't use the back arm rest and you can't lower the back seats (they are all looped together). To hold up the sides they want you to slide a hook between your back side window and the molding. After a few times doing that you would have loose scatched molding. It 's not a good design, save your money.
donval
Thanks for the advice. I was planning to inquire of my dealer before an upcoming trip, but I won't bother. I guess a dull-colored blanket will have to do. I hope the Ford people read your post and can come up with something more useful and less destructive. I wouldlike to have a cover.......wouldn't you think they could come up with something that even just laid across the back? Guess I will have to work on that.......maybe that is my millionaire maker! brucesmays
My solution...Wal-Mart, in the table cloth area-a 60 x something rectangular table cloth in almost the same color as the interior. Only $11.97 plus tax. I keep it folded up under the back seat when not needed. Then just unfold, toss over everything in the back of the car. My back windows were tinted when I bought my Edge (assuming everyone's is?). I put 15% tint all around and with the back windows already tinted pretty dark, adding the 15 to them makes it nearly impossible to see into the very back. tiaquessa
Does anyone feel like Ford rushed the Edge to the market. I just think they should have thought out a bunch of things that we talk about here. To list a few: cargo cover, HID lighting, signal mirrors, rear bumper cover, etc... I just think they should have thought out a bunch of things that we talk about here. To list a few: cargo cover, HID lighting, signal mirrors, rear bumper cover, etc... Don't know about that. I love my edge but it is clear that the little fit-and-finish items (or lack of) are so far behind the Japanese/German vehicles. Kind of sad and stupid. Imagine what the Edge could be if those details were paid attention to.
tpm419419
I think some of these options are intensionally left off to be added in later years. I found this to be true with Ford products I've owned in the past

I found this to be true with Ford products I've owned in the past I actually have this as a "factory added accessory" for $115 option. I took it out the very first day in disappointment and put it in my closet because I don't want anyone else to see it. Talk about stupid. Rubber bands with plastic hooks!! Yikes, Ford execs need to pull this one off the plate real quick. Bad idea guys and gals.
TTTrish3
I traded in my '03 Trailblazer for an '08 Edge Limited last month. I love it! The only think I miss is the cargo cover I had in the Trailblazer. I've been thinking about getting the cargo cover but just never got around to it. I'm glad I procrastinated. Thanks all! bri719
I think some of these options are intensionally left off to be added in later years. I found this to be true with Ford products I've owned in the past I definitely agree with that. by the way they're called accessories for a reason yes it's frustrating waiting or looking around for the right things where none (or no good ones) exist, but I love the Edge no matter what. I'll happily take a few frustrations and retro-fit or aftermarket the vehicle to suit my needs even more. the bumper cover would be nice, but I'm assuming they'll add that in no time. in the meantime, the dealer and aftermarket both has some good ones. they're already having the paint-colored body fairings all the way down and it's less than 2 years since the debut. the look will continue to evolve / update. mirror signals? kind of a gimmick actually but hey whatever. I don't find them a ton safer than normal turn signals I can definitely see it on the limited but not really standard on the SEL. I just wish they had the awesome blind spot mirrors for 2008 but at least 09 they will. and the Homelink / outside temp rearview would make a nice option rather than buy and install

tvulcan
I bought one of the "factory" units and installed it according to the directions. What a crock! First, one of the plastic hooks gave out. I was able to engineer a fix, but now the other one is failing in a different way. Also, the stiffeners that are supposed to keep the cover flat and extended to the back glass need some serious Viagra. I was able to use the arm rest by just not hooking the cover there. But overall, this so-called cover is trash. I'm headed ti the table cloth section of Wal*Mart. That sounds like a way better solution. Now, do I remove the hooks and leave the holes, try to repair the hooks again or come up with some "buttons" to hide the holes???

tvulcan
These pix should show the problem areas. It's like they started out with a good idea, then really cheaped out on it.
ablb
Don't they ever look at what they are trying to compete with? akirby
Don't they ever look at what they are trying to compete with? Take a look at what the Germans do. Ford had that same retractable design on the Explorer 15 years ago - way before the Germans were even making SUVs. For some reason they chose not to design it into the Edge. Having had at least 2 vehicles with them in the past I don't miss them. When you need to drop the seats you have to remove and store the retracted cover which is a little annoying. Maybe they'll add them back with the mid cycle refresh.
Lex Talionis
I loved the retractable cover in my VW. it was awesome and very sturdy. having now seen it, it is not that bad 'looking'. I would, on second thought, try to salvage it. I can't imagine a Walmart creation being any better than this... and this one color matches and is cut to fit. I can see what you mean by cheap, but at least they got the fabric cut to fit, not I might try to improve the engineering of it before tossing it out. for example, cheap tent poles sewn into it could add that support you need, keep it light and still roll-able, and sit on the edge of the window sill that lame strap does in picture #5. I don't know why they chose not to add it. Sounds like a project for Lex.......

tvulcan
Well, you got me thinking. And I think I've solved some of the problem. I applied a version of Viagra. Now, if I could find a set of hooks that mounted in a decent way. The 2nd hook failed as I was doing this work and I had to re-engineer it like the other one. It's still only a temporary fix. I need a hook like this that mounts simply but with some guts. One thing that's less than perfect is the hatch barely hits the rear edge of the cover and makes it bow up see the last picture). I haven't driven it yet, but I think it's slight enough that it will level out after a couple of bumps in the road (plenty of those around here). If not, a quick thump from the back seat makes it pop right into place. Any ideas for the hooks?
