PTU not covered by the powertrain warranty??

I'm trying to get my PTU seal replaced. I have 51,000 miles on my 2008 edge and I'm being told by two dealers that its not covered under the powertrain warranty. I also called ford and was told the same thing. Has anyone else had this happenend to them? I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle this.

This doesn't explicitly say the PTU seal should be covered but it's darn close. Maybe a dealership employee has some experience with this. If Ford insists it's not covered your only recourse would be small claims court.

 

(1) Your vehicle’s Powertrain components are covered for five years or

60,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The extended coverage applies to

the Engine: all internal lubricated parts, cylinder block, cylinder heads,

electrical fuel pump, electronic engine control unit, engine mounts, flywheel,

injection pump, manifold (exhaust and intake), manifold bolts, oil

pan, oil pump, seals and gaskets, thermostat, thermostat housing, timing

chain cover, timing chain (gears or belt), turbocharger/supercharger unit,

valve covers, water pump; Transmission: all internal parts, clutch cover,

seals and gaskets, torque converter, transfer case (including all internal

parts), transmission case, transmission mounts; Front-Wheel Drive:

axle shafts, bearings (front and rear), center support bearing, drive

shafts, final drive housing (including all internal parts), hubs-automatic

front locking (four-wheel drive), locking rings (four-wheel drive), seals

I think the "seals and gaskets" should cover the PTU seal. I'm still fighting with them about it. I think the PTU is not mentioned because the warranty only has a write up for a front wheel drive or rear wheel drive trucks. There is no mention of a AWD tuck, and since the PTU is part of the AWD system is not listed. I still not understand why ford doesn't mention AWD in the warranty.

It mentions transfer case (and all internal parts). The PTU seal should be considered an internal part of the transfer case.

I specifically asked about this when I was purchasing mine given all the issues with the AWD's PTU, and the Dealer said the PTU *WAS* covered under the 5year PowerTrain warranty.

 

Take it to a different dealer, sounds like this one is trying to get out of doing the work.

I think whomever was called at Ford was just agreeing with the dealer without doing any investigation. If you can't get the first dealer to change their mind go find another one.

I've been told by both my dealer and Ford that it is covered under the 5year/60,000 warranty, so like others have said, either argue until you get your way or take it to another dealer.

2013 Edge AWD. Just been notified my PTU isn't covered under warranty because the front wheels have 3/32nds more tread on them than the rear. They said that over worked the PTU and caused it to fail. They said it was my fault as I didn't rotate the tires every 5,000 miles.

That is total BS. The allowable difference is up to 3%. Even if we just take the wheel diameter into account, 3% of 17 inches (let's say) is 0.51 or 1/2". 1/2" is allowable. 3/32" is only 0.09". Do you get the feeling you are being ripped off? I certainly do. Go back to the dealer & argue the point. If they don't agree, get the case number and escalate to Ford via National Customer Service (phone number in owner's manual) or PM FordService (Tricia) on here with details.
