FutureOwner?
Hello All! I figured I'd introduce myself here, since this is the actual question I have. I'm currently stationed overseas, headin back stateside in Aug of '12. I've actually pre-ordered a '12 Explorer through the mil car sales program over here, but have started to rethink needing the extra space now that we know our family is going to stop at 4. So I figured I could save a few thousand by swapping to a slightly smaller SUV/XUV. The two available through the program that interest me are the Edge and the Dodge Journey. Price points were almost identical when I specced them out with what I wanted (Edge SEL w/202A and trailer, Journey Lux with Flexible Seating Group and trailer....I really want leather seats and dual climate control). So, the question is, has anyone test driven both of the '11 models? I know some big changes hit both vehicles this model year, I was wondering what made you choose the Edge. I personally like the Edge's styling a LOT more, but I can only see pictures, as there are none over here (there is an '11 Explorer and '11 Durango here, which helped me choose the Ex, but I dont know that that neccessarily translates into the Edge being > the Journey). Any help would be appreciated.... --Greg
Edgieguy
Hey Greg, Thank you for your service. Regarding your choices, we actually own an 11 Edge Sport (mine) and an 11 Explorer (hers). We have two small children, and although the Edge can hold two strollers two kids, and most of their stuff, we just needed a little extra room. I brought my wife to look at the EX, we placed our double stroller behind the third row seat and closed the hatch. Everything fit. When you have the inlaws with you or friends and you need that extra seating plus the room for the kids and their stuff the Ex is the way to go. We are totally happy with it. With that said, I love my Edge. It's sporty, comfortable, and it's sharp looking. When the weathers crummy and I can't drive my sports car, I'm just as pleased driving the Edge. You can't go wrong with the comfort and features of the Edge. A co worker just got the new Journey and as nice as it is I like my interior and exterior far better. I think Ford chose better materials for the interior. They have nice textures, pleasing colors, and a very good fit and finish. You just don't get that feeling in the Dodge. It feels....cold, hard, plasticy. If you like the hard edges of Dodges design language then go for it, for me I really like the smooth front end of the Edge better. Do your research and read as much as you can on all three. Just so you could see them side by side, here are pictures of my wife's Ex and my Edge. If you want anymore or of something specific drop a line. k1200rsport
I test drove the 11 Journey before I test drove the 11 Edge. Journey has nice features bjut it can not beat features in Edge Limited. Also styling is far better in Edge, all the interior materials are better. Journey is more like a station wagon then CUV. Also it is Dodge, so resale value is very horrible. Edge has higher resale value then Journey. Edge has far better gas mileage then Journey. In city Edge is upto 21 MPG and highway at 70 MPH it is 28.5 MPG, Journey good luck.

Any help would be appreciated.... --Greg Greg, I just went through the process of purchasing a car. I was going from a 2nd Generation Nissan Xterra to a new car. I checked out the 2011 Grand Cherokee, 2011 Durango, 2011 Journey, 2011 Explorer, and 2011 Edge. The 2011 Explorer is an excellent ride. I love the extra space and the terrain response system, but felt for my needs the additional space wasn't a necessity. I liked the Grand Cherokee and Durango, but those boys are a bit big for the new 6 powering them and the V8 is too hungry for gas (not to mention the 2013 model is expecting an 8-speed that will likely improve the gas mileage, a serious weak point on the Chrysler models). So I ended up comparing the 2011 Journey Lux and 2011 Edge Limited. There's a price difference there, but the equipment is similar. At 6'2" with wide shoulders, I felt the Edge has a bit more shoulder room front and back, and superior 2nd row leg room (not by much, but it's there if you ask me). The 2011 Journey's Interior is really nice, but I'd give the edge to the Edge (pun intended). I like the drive of the edge (a bit smoother over bumps), but the Dodge is nice and feels a bit more like a sport sedan. The Dodge is a bit longer, leading to more room in the rear for some cargo (or a third row). What really pulled it all together for me was 2 factors. The mileage on the Edge is better, and from what I have read, the Edge's AWD performs better in bad weather (a significant factor for me). I purchased the Edge Limited for the features, and absolutely love it thus far.

While the Jeep GC is fantastic in Snow the Journey is not quite as capable but not bad. The Edge actually in my experience (2011) does better in snow AND icey roads compared to the Jeep GC (which is no small feat). Very stable even going up an icy hill when it was about -5F outside. I was highly impressed with the Edge's performance.
oakjefferson
I never really considered the Journey in the same class as the Edge - it was more a larger Compass/Patriot, Escape
