Edgieguy
Decided to change the oil and searched for a replacement filter. I checked online and the parts store sold me a Motorcraft FL820. turns out that was the wrong filter, it was too thick, and wouldn't screw on without hitting the motor. My friend then had a NAPA filterr brought to his shop which fit. My question is, which is the correct Motorcraft part number? By the way, at 4K miles, the break in oil was black. Motorcraft is FL500S, Service pro is M2500, Napa is 7045. FL820 is for all 4.6,5.4 & 6.8 liter V8's.

Thank you, You'd think a parts store would sell the right one, especially since I specifically said, its the 3.7L not the 3.5!
richy
I've only got 4800km on mine but have my Amsoil synthetic oil and this filter by WIX ready to go: http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=57502
Edgieguy
I was surprised to see such black oil... Had I looked earlier, I would have changed it earlier. Oh well. Clean full synthetic in there now and i see that my mileage is creeping up this tank already.

No need to rely on the parts guy.
cal3thousand
Thank you, You'd think a parts store would sell the right one, especially since I specifically said, its the 3.7L not the 3.5! Apparently those guys don't know 6 Cylinders from 8 because the 3.7 and 3.5 use the same filter.... heck, even the Mustang uses it (both 3.7 and 5.0). (PS I know some V8's use this filter too, but its made generally for V6 applications.) I'm going to run a filter with a higher bypass setting as I live in So Cal and the cold starts are few and far between. I will stomp on the gas at a light more often than I will have cold starts, so the increased filtration pressure before bypass will make sure I'm still filtering oil at WOT. I don't like the idea of throwing unfiltered oil at the engine at WOT. Unfiltered oil during the 10 cold (real cold) starts a year, I will put up with. I think the Ford engineers made the bypass rating at 8 psi to make sure to cover the vast people in cold climates, which doesn't pertain as well to my desert climate and driving style.
