New 2011 Edge Limited AWD Owner Angst

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I just picked up my 2011 Edge Limited AWD vehicle 5 days ago. I did a fair amount of research and choose the Edge over a Lexus RX350 and Subaru Outback. I was thrilled with my purchase, and then I ran across a post regarding the Sync/MyTouch issues. That post led me to a ton of posts across multiple message boards that led me to be very concerned about the stability of the Sync/MySunc software

My experiences in the week I've had the Edge is that the system is definitely laggy and a little flakey. That being said, I don't consider any of the issues I've had with Sync anything other than minor annoyances that don't detract from the excellent user experience I've found with Sync. That being said, I'm trying to baby the system a bit in order to not do any sequence of events that have caused issues (based upon the feedback of users in this forum)

I'd really love to get some insight on how stable the current state of Sync on the 2011 Edge is ?. It seems like there have been a few updates (I'm at Gen2, v2.4) that have provided a fair amount of stability as long as the dealer does the install correctly.

I've definitely got an issue with the vehicle pulling to the right. It's not what I'd consider a huge deal, but it's something that needs to be fixed by the dealer. The deal breaker for me will be if Sync proves to be unstable. I've got a fairly high level of tolerance for Sync issues as I'm a software developer and I understand that new software has bugs. I don't want to give Ford a pass because they clearly released half baked software that should have been stable by the time it hit the Edge. However, it seems as though Ford has been pretty aggressive in releasing new versions. I do think that there may always be some lag, but I absolutely think there's no reason why Ford can't work out the bugs and release a rock solid Sync/MySync system.

My big fear is that I'm stuck having to pull fuse 29 on a regular basis to reboot the system or that Sync just bombs out for no apparent reason and it's stuck at the dealer for several days while the dealer struggles to figure out how to correct the issues.

Right now, the Edge is just about the best vehicle I've ever owned. Alignment issues aside, the ride is great, the vehicle handles extremely well and the technology is useful. That being said, if the Sync system proves to be wildly unstable, I won't be an Edge owner for long.

I appreciate any advice/input I can get and I look forward to being able to, one day, being able to contribute to this very useful forum !

I like it very much too, and the Syncissues annoyme a lot, but, is just a computer, and hope Ford fix it or recall it, and we need to be demanding with it, we paid hard earned money for it, even an iPas wold do a better job than that slow Sync module which does not even deserve the label of beta software, it at least a year from be ready IMHO. I hope they don't come with a new and really good solution for the 2012 vehicles and tell us that the 2011 are obsolete, that would be a deal breaker for me.

Now, the car as a car seems to be pretty good, although like to drink gas like crazy ....

I've had my 2011 edge since last October and have not had any problems with the my ford touch. It rebooted itself once, but that's been it. I have not had my dealer install any updates. I have my blackberry connected via bluetooth, keep my ipod connected via usb. All systems work great including the navigation system, which I absolutely love because I drive a lot for my job.

Thank you for the positive views, I'm waiting on delivery and must admit have had concerns from comments I've read here.

I've done my updates, my dealer did an update, all is fine.

Gracenotes sucks.

I wish my iPhone had MAP, but that's not sync's fault.

Sometimes the touch buttons lag a bit but most of the time it's pretty responsive.

Outside of that, I love this vehicle.

After two feet of snow over the past couple of weeks and everything still melting, I'd love to give it a bath but that would be pointless right now.

I'm upgraded to 2.4 and have had no issues whatsoever once the upgrade was complete. I always loved it, but now I have the vehicle I thought I was getting in the first place, and love it all that much more. I'm extremely happy with my purchase (2011 Sport fully loaded).

In fact, I find myself proclaiming loudly at least once a week how much I f***ing love my Sport! ::gently caresses dash ::

Well, this mean that there is hope for me and all the others that have endless problems with the stubborn console on the Edge :-)

Thanks for the input ! It's good to hear that the Gen2 (v2.4) has stabilized the system for the most part. As I mentioned in my original post, I have no problem with glitches and lag, I do have a problem with a unstable system that reboots consistently and requires a fuse pull to get back working.

To date, the biggest issue has been that I got a Navigation Fault message on on right side screen once while the navigation system was loading up (and the volume was set to the max level as well) Though getting blasted by the loud radio was not enjoyable, I don't consider either issue more than a minor annoyance (since the navigation system booted up and the error on the right touchscreen went away)a

The lag throughout the menus is pretty bad, but the only time it becomes annoying is when entering in destinations for the navigation system (that's the only time I need to type more than a few letters so the lag is more noticeable) Given that I can enter destinations vi voice commands or through Google and have them sent to the car, I can live with that lag.

I do think that the lag is more software related, rather than a hardware limitation. An example would be for iPhone 3G users who upgraded to the iPhone 4 software. When the software first came out it was almost unusable on the 3G but became much better to use as software upgrades came out. I don't know that the MYTouch system will ever be zippy but my guess is that the lag will be reduces by further upgrades

Once again, thanks for the input. It will take a month or two of being relatively problem free before I feel confident in the stability of the system, but this does ease my mind a bit !

I picked up my 2011 Sport on 1/26 and have had no issues with Sync either. I have a MyTouch 4g synced to it and have used my iPod without any problems at all. I've used the nav a couple of times, made phone calls, used the voice activated features and all is well.

I'd say the only "complaint" I have is the glare on the screen when I have that wonderful Vista roof open, but I can't blame the system on that when I have nice sunny weather in Florida! :-)

I picked up my sport on new years weekend, no problems yet . I've hooked up my I touch thru usb, a droid x and wifes's LG phone . Only complaint is there is a difinete delay when using touch screen, but I think i,m used to it , no big deal. It also has gotton confused when we both are in the car with our phones, takes longer to connect to a phone....

I haven't find a way to check it, but once you register the car online, you can check it, and also you will see, if it crash like crazy and works reeeeeallllly slow, then I'd does not had the last update, that as the dealer told me, is a recall, mine had it installed and seems to be working better, still slow, and the system still have many annoyances design wise.

But at least today I connected a new iPod with 19Gb of music and the whole thing was ready in about 5 minutes. No crashes so far.

I had some early problems, got the 2.4 update and the system seems more stable and bit quicker. Im thinking things are only getting better as they work on this system.

So 2.4 is a dealer update? I have 2.3 installed from the factory and SyncMyRide doesn't show any updates for me after doing the Status Checker Tool.

I bought a 2011 Ford Edge Sel, Dec 28, 2010. Three weeks later it was in the shop for three days replacing the module computer system. Yesterday, I drove 120 miles and the computer went down four times, did a systems check each time, and came back up and seems to be working. But four checks in 120 miles? The gas mileage is not pretty. In town, on streets of 25, 35 and 45 MPH, it gets less mileage than a full-size dodge pickup, and on the road not much better. The ride is rougher than most cars I've driven with the exception of a Jeep Liberty. The overlapping heating controls drives my wife batty. She can never get the passenger-side temperature right. Needless to say, I did not do my homework, but I am now, and looking to trade this sucker in when new models roll out in the fall.

I've had my 2011 Limited since October 2010. Initially, Sync was totally buggy, but since the latest update, it has been pretty reliable. Mine seems to have issues with any USB device (iPod, Memory Stick). Every now and then, it will display "iPod Dicsonnected", which is remedied by shutting down the Edge, and re-starting. Also, every now and then, my Driod Incredible will not pair, but again, restarting the Edge fixes it.

I've gotten to the point that whenever Sync goes mental, I just chuckle. The hiccups do not occur that often, so when they do, they are just a minor annoyance.

"The ride is rougher than most cars I've driven with the exception of a Jeep Liberty."

The very large and heavy wheels and tires Ford uses on the Edge is a major contributor to this issue. I know many fans love the look of the 22" wheels, but even the 18" wheel tire combination is very heavy.

I must admit that I cannot fault the ride of my 2007 Edge with its 18" wheels, but my wife notes that our 2004 Chrysler Town & Country seems to ride a bit softer. It sports 16" wheels and mono-tube rear shocks, a part not yet available for the Edge from any vender.

I agree with you totally. I, too, looked hard at RX350, Toyota Venza, Nissan Murano and found the features in the Ford Edge superior to all of the above. I purchased a Limited 3 days ago and have had nothing but problems with the phone, ipod itunes. Even though my IPhone 4 initially synced with the car every time I leave and get back in it has to be re-synced. What was supposed to be an exhilarating experience of having a new car is a nightmare. Don't want to show it to anyone until problems fixed - not a good advertisement!! I can only hope these issues will be resolved - otherwise Lemon Law here I come!!

I'm assuming that your joking when implying those issues are the result of incompatibility between Microsoft and Apple. If your not, then lets just say your not well informed.

I don't know that the buggy MyTouch system make a good Lemon Law case, but it's bad enough that I'm at least looking at other vehicles that I can make a lateral transition to. The main reason I purchased the Edge was because of the technology (specifically the MyTouch system and the next generation navigation system) and the biggest frustrations are

Someone posted a link to an excellent post on MyTouch from www.autoblog.com. It gave some great insight as to some of the inerworkings of the software. The most useful thing, I thought, was the fact that MyTouch does an automatic reboot after 24 hours of usage (it does this when the vehicle is turned off) This explains why some of the issues seem to go away after a day (though not why they happen in the first place)

I think the bottom line is that each time I turn on my Edge, I have little confidence that everything is going to work. I've already just stopped using the navigation system because it's just too slow in tracking my position and it's painful to try and enter a POI. I avoid using a USB connected device because I think the resources consumed when the Edge reindexes the device puts the system in a very fragile state. Even after that babying of the system, I still have issues where the bluetooth suddenly loses the ability to connect to a phone or pair to a new phone. That only lasted for a day (thanks to the nightly system reboot) but it's something that can pop up any time and is not isolated to a brand of phone.

I'm sure software upgrades will improve performance, but Ford is doing a crappy job of letting owners know that new version are available (I found out that v2.7 was available through this forum), letting owners know what each upgrade is intended to fix. Also, it seems like each time you take in your vehicle to the dealer to get an upgrade done, it's 50/50 that you'll be leaving with a fully functioning vehicle.

As frustrated as I am, I truly feel for those early adopters that had to do fuse pulls on a regular basis and had their cars in the shop for weeks because the techs botched a MyTouch update....you guys are the ones that truly deserve to have a solid working MyTouch !

I have no interest in spending more on a car than I already have, but if I can trade in the Edge for something that has most of the tech I want, is much more stable and reliable, and costs less than what my Edge is worth (according to Kelly Blue Book) then I'm crazy not to consider it.

I had thought the Edge was one of the best vehicles I've owned and I certainly won't go as far as saying that the car is a nitemare. I'm looking at a Volkswagen Tiguon and if that doesn't work out, I'll live with the Edge and hope for the best from newer MyTouch versions. However, I wouldn't recommend the Edge to anyone now.
