mountain girl
I'm close to purchasing a Ford Edge..... would like feedback from Edge owners regarding it's capabilities in the snow. My husband is pushing for the Subaru Outback, and I just can't get away from the fact that my "mother" drove one, seems kinda "grandma-ish" to me! I need a car for 5,000 to 9,000 elevation, we get between 5 and 10 feet of snow.
ThinLine
I try to drive as fast as I can in the snow as the Edge will allow. I will sometimes see lights in the rearview coming up on me fast and then they blow by me..........the three times this happened, they were all WRX's. The Edge IMHO is great in the snow, but Subaru invented AWD and it comes standard on every car they build.
choff1138
Mine has handled great all winter in Alaska - we don't regularly get 10 inches of snow at one time, but we haven't seen pavement since the beginning of November. I driven many a Subaru and they don't come close to comparing on the interior or comfort. Handling is probably equal now.
Tripster
I live in Alaska as well and I agree with Choff. What kinda tires are you running Choff?

I have the All weather Michelin 18's that came with the car. I am sure I could get better ones that would maybe stop a bit better, but I feel confident and I was tired of switching tires twice a year. Didn't want studs anymore (though that seems to be an Alaska thing) You enjoying your new ride Tripster?

I need a car for 5,000 to 9,000 elevation, we get between 5 and 10 feet of snow. I live in Utah. I have a 2010 Edge. I sold my 2008 Legacy to get it. I have had 2 Subaru Legacy's in the past. Both of those Legacy's did AMAZING in the snow. So far my Edge has done pretty well but it really hasn't been tested in the snow as much this year like I did with my Legacy's. I went with the Edge based on looks and options for the rest of the year rather than handling during the couple of snow storms that I get caught in. You definitely can't go wrong with a Subaru for handling, of that I'm convinced. Some of the newer models look better than others. The Outback and Forester aren't too inspiring. nextime
I do not have AWD and this so far is the best thing I have ever driven in the snow. I probably have owned 20+ cars and this is the best in the Snow.
drevv
It handles like a dream in the snow! i live in Boston, where we received over 40 inches of snow in last 30 days since i''ve had my EDGE. I'm extremely happy with the way it handles in these conditions. I've only experienced slight fishtailing when taking turns in thick snow, but that might be due to the fact that it's lighter than some larger SUVs. I had 4x4 Nissan Pathfinder about seven years ago and cant recall any fish-tailing, while it was in 4x4 mode. but I believe it was due to its weight. However, intelligent AWD seems to give you a much smoother ride overall and way better gas millage.
rwolson
I live north of Boston near the NH border. Like drevv, we've received a lot of snow. I find the car's a tank in the snow.
Burtman
I have had three Subaru Outbacks in the past,97,00 and a 2010. I totaled the 2010 Subaru after owning it for five months and could not make a deal on a new one. Test drove the Edge and was very impressed on how it handled. Gas milage was better with the 2.5 engine on the Subaru 29 mpg. I am getting 23 so far on my Edge Limited AWD. As for the AWD it is just like the Subaru. I live in Syracuse NY and we get lots of snow. It drives great on the 18" tires that came on the vehicle. I also like the added room inside. Both are nice cars but I would go for the edge just for all of the fun toys that come with it. I am very happy with the Sync system and Navigation along with the sound system. Good luck to you.............

Tulsa
With FWD and 15 inches of snow, not so good. After shoveling my driveway off, I got struck trying to get into the street. Once that was cleared and onto the street where there was a bit less snow due to traffic already on it, I've experienced no issues.

If you didn't have to back up and turn to go you would have probably been fine. Expecting a big storm like that, back into your driveway for a running start the next day. That being twice as much snow as I've ever seen at one time in my life and having to shovel it, I'm thinking Houston would be a good place to live. We don't often get storms like that here either, but the backing into the driveway trick got me out onto the street a time or two in my old escort... that got through some pretty good storms. Chucker
I live in Ontario, and the Edge AWD is the best vehicle I've ever driven in the snow. I've not yet come even close to getting stuck or having an incident. I am running the stock all-season tires, and though I think snow tires are a good idea, I can't justify it when my Edge with 90,000 kms on the tires seems unstoppable. Now, if I could just get all of those other people off the road....
