Rll420
Hey everyone, Im new to the forums and just had a quick question. Two weeks ago i ordered a AWD tuxedo black Ford Edge Sport, has anyone experienced snow yet with one of these? Im just curious how this thing is gunna handle the harsh winters here in Western New York. Thanks!
mleber
RII420, First I would like to congratulate you on your purchase. I have had my AWD Tux Black Sport for nearly 3 months now. I really enjoy the vehicle and it handles very well. I am in Florida, so I cannot comment on snow conditions but I can comment on the excellent handling in rain, heavy rain and super heavy rain conditions. I have never had any issues even at 70mph in heavy rain conditions. The only movement on the vehicle is if there is a heavy crosswind and that only tends to SLIGHTLY tilt the vehicle for a second or so. I think everyone understands the tilt I am talking about but this vehicle is pretty low to the ground and it keeps its footing. My last car was a BMW X5 and it stood higher off the ground. It also has superb handling in the heavy rain conditions but would tilt more due to heavy crosswinds. It did have a higher center of gravity, still felt safe at higher speeds, but the Edge strangely feels safer at half the price. Far as snow, best wishes... Rll420
Thanks for the info, we were just starting to second guess ourselves. I did as much research as i could trying to figure out what kind of tires it would come with and seeing if winter tires were even a possibility. I was told they are an all season tire and very similar to the tires put onto the mustang gt. I would have went with the limited but i just like the look and of the sport so much more. You made a great decision as for the vehicle. They are gorgeous! As far as winter tires are concerned, it really depends on where you live. There is a misnomer that "snow" tires which term is interchanged with winter tires are only for snow. All season tires are a compromise at best. The rubber compound gets too hard and inflexible at under about 40 degrees. Your tires are what connect you to the road. If you plan on keeping the car for a while, invest in a 2nd set of wheels with winter tires and you will never have an issue. Just respect the laws of physics. Newton takes offence when people try to mess with his 3rd law, LOL. I was in collision reconstruction for 5 years (investigated fatal collisions), so I've had a lot of training and experience with tires. I am driving on the 18 all weather that came with my limited and they seem to do pretty well. I have always had a fwd with studded tires before. I blissfully was ignorantly unaware of "winter" tires that didn't have studs. The majority of my driving experience is from Alaska so driving on snow is almost as normal as not. The sport is pretty sweet looking.

Carrie, I've been reading your posts about how your Sport drives in the snow with great interest. I was delighted to read how successfully your tires have been working for you. I have 20" Pirelli Scorpions M & S tires. So far, so good with those although today was the first snow it's driven in. People who drive in snow all the time respect it. Down our way, people forget what to do and try to get away with all the bad driving habits that dry pavement will allow whereas once the traction (coefficient of friction) decreases, then they're in trouble. I had 18" Bridgestones on my FX that were absolute garbage in the snow. I am looking forward to better handling.

Two weeks ago i ordered a AWD tuxedo black Ford Edge Sport, has anyone experienced snow yet with one of these? Im just curious how this thing is gunna handle the harsh winters here in Western New York. Thanks! I took my Edge Sport home October 24th, and it was snowing, the machine handled pretty good, but the temps were still above -7c (20F). I opted to get winter tires, as I thougth the OEM tires would not be enough to stop this heavy beast. The tire should be able to handle the snow, as the treading looks like it could remove snow from itself, but the when the tire gets cold, it would IMHO turn into a big skate, and would not handle icey roads very well. When I went to get the tires installed, it was the first snow storm in Edmonton, I had to trek across the city to the tire shop. On clear roads it was good, but on snowy roads i could tell there was some slippage. When the OEM tire was taken off I could really get a good look at the tire, in the middle is "seam" of just rubber, no treads, sipping, etc. My only comment to this is it would help keep the tire quiet, but add no traction benefit. My experience with the Sport in truely snowy roads is limited to maybe 5 days, but I think the OEM tires might be able to handle one winter season since AWD would help out. I would guess with "winter" tires stopping might be a bit faster, but I am an old biddy driving so I leave plenty of room anyway. I would love to stay home the first big snow day because everyone forgets and my 30 minute drive can easily turn into 2 hours. Enjoy your snow - maybe a white Christmas for you. BonosEdge
For those who have put new tires on - what have you gone with? Have you put new rims on or just swapped the tires out? I know nothing about tires so not sure what the options are. I went over to TireRack which didn't seem to have any snows for the 22" factory rims I have on my Sport. They offered alternative packages on 17" and 18" rims. Is that an option? Can you put different sized rims on the car? If so, is there any advantage between the 17" and 18" tires? Thanks! I added 2011 SEL 18 inch aluminium wheels on the Sport with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R's ...Had a blast last week..never driven anything that good in the snow. I did not bother with the 22s..first, I'm in love with the wheels and want to keep them as clean as possible, second you get a lot more rubber choice in 17 & 18. I would say the only advantage to the 18s is the look..you get less of a shock when you take off the 22s. So..the 22s are in hibernation, and i have nice safe fun in the snow with no worries and a very nice look. The 2011 SEL 18s are very nice imho. Cheers! Did you get the rims and tires from the dealer? Do you mind if I asked what it all costs? Any problem with the tire pressure sensor? Thanks again! Stephen
Hi.. No, not a problem.. The dealer wanted 525$ per wheel if i remember correctly... I got them here from this ebay seller http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280580452609&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_500wt_922 But had to pay alot for shipping...Less if you are closer to him i guess..anyway, they arrived mint in box. Brand new... So Wheels: 750$ Nokian Hakkas: 1200$ Sensors ( original Ford valve type): 220$ No trouble with the sensors..the rubber man just programmed them..perfect! I think this is an awesome kit..we had tons of freezing rain here yesterday...i could not believe how this thing performed. Cheers S

Rll420
i did find 22 inch snow tires made by pirelli not sure if they would actually fit on the car or not? Also switching from 22 to 18 inch rims doesnt that cause performance issues... speedometer, handling blah, blah?
MrHappy
Not rim issue, it's a height issue. Put larger sidewalls on an 18" rim and you can have no effect to the speedo. Handling with any snow tire will be much softer.
cromagnum
Hi, I bought an AWD Edge Sport, and I live in Northeast Ohio, and we just had about 3 feet of snow. I took my time going to work, about 8 miles one way, I had no real issues getting there. It was a good test to see if I needed snow tires, before I would spend all that money on winter tires and wheels. Hope this helps somebody to decide. Edgieguy
So the day after Christmas New Jersey got hit with 12-24" of snow depending on where you live. The roads were wrecked. The snow started slowly and early in the day and by dinner time we had a full blown whiteout. Lots of ice underneath a layer of new fallen snow (which wasn't difficult when we were seeing 2"/hour) It took me nearly 30 minutes to dig my Edge out of its parking spot (lousy plow drivers) but then it was clear sailing. I was very cautious, as all the crash reports I had taken all day involved 4WD vehicles. The snow was still pounding and the only way I was able to drive home (Garden State Parkway for those familiar with it) was to look out my drivers side window and judge my distance from the center divider. I averaged about 20 mph and made it home safely, even snow plowing through the 15" we had on our unplowed street. Im still going to consider regular snow tires, but im very satisfied with the performance of the 22" Pirellis.
