akirby
Which bring up an interesting point. How exactly are the EPA estimates calculated? There's no way they were going over 60 or 65 and got anywhere close to 25mpg in the Edge. The details are at www.fueleconomy.gov - I know the new test includes one acceleration up to 75 or 80. radicon
Just finished taking the first trip with my 2011 from Texas to New Mexico and back. Traveled a total of 1256.8 miles in two days and hand calculated average mileage was 25.01 mpg. I had right at 3000 miles on the motor when I left. The average would have been much better, but I had a head wind of 30 to 40 mph for most of the trip out. On the trip back, I did not have much of a tail wind as I hoped. Instead I still had a small head wind to cross winds of 10mph. I had the cruise control on most all of the way, 70-75mph. One tankful hit 29.55 mpg on the way back home with the AC on. The trip out average 22.47 mpg. The trip back average 28.35mpg. My 2011 edge is averaging about 2.5 mpg better than my 2008 did through the same time periods. Both vehicles tended to get better gas mileage when the outside air temperature was over 60 degrees. Now that this nasty winter season is ALMOST over for all of us in the USA, the edge should start getting even better mileage. I also do not run my climate controls on AUTO. At highway speeds, running the ac does not seem to make any difference on gas mileage. Using ac in stop and go traffic, gas mileage tends to go south in a hurry. LALarry
Just did a fill up on my '11 Edge Sport after a week and a half of 80% highway driving. I must say that I am babying the Edge a bit as I get use to it. I was pleasantly surprised to have gotten a very decent 22/MPG combined! Not bad for a vehicle of this size and weight. I don't feel so bad about trading in my '09 Mini Cooper. Was only getting 3/MPG better on that.
rmmick
I have had my 2011 sport fwd since october, i travel about 100 miles per day, with a lot if idling time in the winter especially, as i am in sales here in cleveland ohio. I had a 2010 edge ltd fwd prior to this one. the sport definately eats more fuel. i just drove round trip to ft. lauderdale, and although the computed fuel economy wasn't bad at 20.8 mpg's (that was averaging about 70 to 75 mph (with a long run thru geogio w/cruise set at 82) so not bad. but by comparison to the 3.5 ltd, the 2011 sport gets about 3 to 4 mpg less combined. i drive approx 36,000 year and basically live in the car and have noticed especially in city driving the sport does poorly. that being said, if you keep it at posted speeds, 60 - 65, for any length of time the mpg really picks up into the 22-23 mpg range. but who actually drives 62 onn the freeway? no one here in cleveland....it's either 75 or 25. overall, excluding the MYFORD TOUCH issues (been reflashed twice, still not any better) the sport is much nicer riding vehicle thatn the 2010 ltd. the 22" tires and wheels did a great job this winter as we got pounded all winter long....just goes to show as long as you have a good tire with good tread, you can drive thru almost anything if you are not crazy to try anything stupid...common sense I have noticed though that I have an awful lot of stone chips behind all 4 wheels though and also in front of the rear wheels....propbably due to the tires being oversized abit and actually sticking out over the wheel wells just an inch or so i had an oil change done at the local lincoln dealer here and the gm saw my car and came up to me and asked where he could get rims like that for his MKX's (which look very cheap to me) to "sport" them up. he didn't realize that they were standard w/sport. they are also a customer of mine and actually had a customer that was in the showroom looking at the MKX come outside, look at the sport compared to the MKX, looked at the stickers of each one, and he basically said...sport here i come! I loved it...not to mention that the sport had a sticker about $8000 less than the MKX he was looking at comparably equipped. roll on Blue Oval....great vehicle...now let's get the techno stuff (MYFORD Touch) system fixed!!!!!!!!!!! modette
You have "broken" the code Jim. The Edge does 'pretty good' at 60-65 MPH. BUT (there's always a but isn't there). The Edge is ANYTHING but aerodynamic, in fact it seems to be pretty 'draggy'. Try interstate driving at 75-80 and watch what happens!! Yikes!! and OUCH... Yep, and our speed limits here in CO are 75mph and going 80mph is a norm. Its not safe to be a lot slower then traffic so only time we do 65 is driving through Colorado Springs or down in Denver. I've owned both a 2007 Ford Edge AWD SEL+ and now a 2010 Ford Edge AWD SEL. The shift point in the 2010 suck, and it gets no better gas mileage but then again I bet it was not made for 75mph speed limits either. JonnyO
Just wanted to say that im not happy with my edge's fuel mileage here in Ontario im getting 11.1L /100km on the hwy. i only have 40,000km ....Honestly Ford has such faulty advertising they say that the edge has the best fuel mileage better than others well i beg to differ i love my edge the look the feel the options that i have but the fuel mileage im not happy anyone else in Ontario feel the same way??? Edgieguy
Sadly I guess anyway you cut it, moving a 2+ ton vehicle shaped like a block at 75mph+ speeds isn't going to net you the awesome mileage you'd get from a sleeker lighter sedan. I'm rather satisfied to be getting 20+ Mpg on a barely broken in 4200 mile engine making 305HP and rolling huge blingy wheels with AWD on a shorter commute which doesn't bode well for fuel economy to begin with. Do I expect to see the 23 stated on the window sticker? I guess maybe on an all hiway trip, alone, with no cargo, doing the speed limit, in cool weather with properly inflated tires and cruise control on.... but realistically, I probably won't. I won't be devastated either if the best I ever get is what I'm getting now.
cirockets
Wow thats strange. I did a 700km highway trip last week, driving 100 to 110kph and the average (computer) was 8.7 liters per 100km...about 28mpg. I only have about 2000km on the car. Three weeks ago I did another highway drive of 300km, reset the reading before leaving, and the average was 9.0 per 100km...(about 50 of that distance was actually in town). blankster
Just completed a 150 mile trip in my 2011 Edge LTD AWD and averaged 22 to 23 MPH. I also have less than 1K miles on it. Overall I'm pretty satisfied.
C2000
Before buying the edge I did an exhaustive research on the GM crossovers including the SRX, the new Jeep and new Durango and all of them fell way short on the fuel ratings so Ford also joined the club. Also on most of these the six cylinder engine got panned for being under powered even the Jeep Hemi did not get good review because of the weight of the vehicle.. Most of these xovers just weigh too much, but the public wants a solid quiet ride and this adds to the weight. Jerry in Minnesota.
dragster13
I have the 2011 Sport with 22" rims and it is getting around 19 to 20 MPG. Where I live there is no such thing a highway mileage. i use cruise when I can, but even on the highway in the Vancouver, BC area, you don't get to run on actual run at substained highway speeds. Just to crowded on the highways unless you drive late at night or early in morning. Took a trip to Seattle with the Edge and was getting 22 MPG. Blueberries
As time goes on, you can pull up crap from the bottom of the tank, and screw your injectors, and more. I try and refill our cars when I'm down to 1/3 tank, unless on a trip.
Duckman
I am with "Tulsa" here. And I'm sorry to inform you Tulsa, it ain't gonna get any better on the highway unless you 'throttle' back to between 60-65 MPH. I have a 2010 Edge "SPORT". (Which b/t/w I do not recommend the sport edition) with 45000 miles (yes I drive a lot) I have yet to get better than 20-MPG highway, city or a mix of both, though my commute is 60 miles every day, and I average 19 MPG. One caveat: I have done some research and have discovered that huge wheels/tires do cost fuel economy. The rotational inertia and cross sectional area take energy to get them put into motion (in this case the energy is spelled 87 octane fuel) and to change the rotational speed takes energy as well (IE accelerate). Unfortunately the Sport edition has huge wheels/tires! ^:- ( ??: Does anyone notice that to get their Edge to accelerate when at highway speeds(70-75), especially if in overdrive, that you have to depress the accelerator enough to get the transmission to shift down about 2 gears or so and bring the RPM up to about 3K before their Edge will speed up? (This could be another cause/repercussion of the 22" wheels) I have also noticed like "KYEDGE" that the Ford Edge is very speed sensitive in relation to MPG. 65 does seem to be the top of the 'sweet' spot, with anything over that speed (at least in the doggy 'SPORT' edition) causing MPG to drop off rapidly. With the cruise control set at 75-80 MPH, (yes, of course I'm in a state with 75 MPH speed limit) my MPG is barely 19. Also, If you have ANY head wind...MPG can easily drop to 17 and I have once gotten 15.5 with a strong head wind! I know that Ford has realized they made a "dog" in the 2010 Edge Sport edition, and they have attempted to fixed the problem for 2011 with 3.7 liter 300+ horsepower engine, but that does not help me one bit since I have a 2010. My next move is to get ride of those 22" mamba wheels that the Sport edition comes with and get much smaller/lower frontal area 18 or 17" wheels. Especially as it looks like we will be staring $4.00 a gallon gas in the face very soon now! (Oh, also, those big 22" tires are have a soft compound rubber and look to only last about 50,000 miles. WAIT till you price out replacement tires for the Sport edition! Yikes....$250 a tire is cheap!) ?? So, does anyone know if 5 bolt ford explorer wheels fit an Edge? I can get a good deal on a set of 4 that look very similar to the Edge 18" wheels. Thx Here Edge Team....a link to an article in Car and Driver about wheel diameter vs. Fuel Economy... Duckman..
