  1. 1. Would you be interested in a Spare Tire Storage System

Recommended Posts

Hi All -

We just purchased a 2008 Limited and in looking over the vehicle, I noticed the two rather large foam block in the spare tire area. I was thinking that this is a huge waste of storage space. I did some looking and really didn't see anything to put in there for a storage system. I did read where some people had hollowed out the foam block.

So this got me thinking, I have a CNC router and was thinking of making a storage system for this area. So I thought I would check the temperature to see if there is any interest in something like this from others. My intention is to make it from Expanded PVC sheet and glue them up. I do understand that price is an issue, so I would make them to be durable, lightweight (for shipping), and as inexpensive as I can. Since there is always benefits in scales of economy, I thought that I would see who would be interested. This is not a commitment, but a request for need or wants. Right now I am looking at doing them for the previous 2010 and earlier vehicles, but would certainly consider making them for the 2011 model if I can get a foam sample and have interest.

If you have questions about this please let me know. I am going to build a set for myself regardless. However if I know people are interest I can optimis the units to be as cost effective as possible.

Thanks for your time,

Mark

I'm definitely interested depending upon price.

+1.

I recently bought an '07 MDX that didn't come w/ the cargo management system. I figured since was originally a $65 option that it would be a cheap add on. Was I wrong - the only way I found to get it is to buy the OEM pieces and then it turns into a $250 item. Some may be in salvage yards but I haven't found any yet (though I haven't search too much).

Has anyone found a picture of what is offered from the factory? It might be nice to see the layout as they would have optimised to size of the compartments and so forth....

happy%20feet.gifWhen I got my Edge I looked at the two big black styrofoam contoured blocks around the spare tire and thought "what a waste of space". Then I became aware of a cargo storage system "available from Ford" for about $350 or so. I saw a picture of it, then I put my mind to work. I built the pictured structure from 1/2 inch plywood and a 2x2. The most expensive thing was the flat black paint, $1 or so at China Mart.

All of the stuff laid out on the floor fits into the available area around the spare tire.

I travel quite frequently and like to have "stuff" just in case there is a need.

Well, I finally got a set of these built, after several prototypes, and just cant be competitive. I can get the price of the material and parts manufacturing within reach, but the assembly time and shipping are the killers. The end up being very large and shipping becomes unrully.

So sorry I wasn't able to deliver.......

Any pictures of what you came up with? How much are we talking about? Have a spare set you would sell?

Here is what I ended up with. These are made of 3/4", 1/2" and laminater 1/4" PVC. They turned out pretty good, but thay are a bi*ch to build. With the gluing and clamping I spent and entire day just in the assembly. The manufacturing of the parts took me about as long as well. The last step is to spary them with truck bed liner to help with noise and positioning.

If you are still interested contact me, but I warn you, they will not be cheap. Then there is shipping......

Just wanted to say thanks for this Mod idea!!! I just did this to my 2010 and it turned out really nice. The sides on mine are 1/2" plywood and the cross member is a 1x2. It's a little tricky getting the sides to fit over some of the body caulk, wiring and a few floorboard curves but not bad. I used a jigsaw to cut a few chunks off the bottom so the sides would sit flush with the floor. Ya gotta get the height right because it supports the carpeted floor panel. Before I installed this structure, I laid down some of that automotive trunk carpet and painted the wood to match the interior trim panels. Tons of room for all the crap I take on my many hunting and fishing adventures!!!!!!!

Would love to see your iteration. Mind posting a photo?

Sorry, not that bright when it comes to posting pics on the web. The structure I built looks identical to Platinum White's pics. I can give you the measurements if you decide to build this.
