spin1966
Hi All, I've been checking out this forum for about a week now while I'm considering ordering a 2011 Edge Limited. My question is has anyone had a situation where they ordered a vehicle and there was a trade in involved? If so, were you able to lock in a trade in value at the time of the order, or did you have to wait till the vehicle came in? I know they wont lock in an incentive when you order, so I'm just wondering how the whole trade in thing works. Thanks for your help! In the US you don't lock in anything really until you take possession of the Edge. I would guess that they only way they would lock in a trade in is if they also too possession of it so that you didn't trash it for the next 8 weeks while waiting. (not saying you specifically would do that - just in general)
lowesdell
I agree with Choff. For the first time in my life I did a private sale of my used car when I bought my 11 SEL and won't do it any other way now. I got several thousand more than a trade in. Also, if you fix the price of the new vehicle, you are stuck with what they offer you for the trade in at time of sale. What are you going to do if they offer you a really, really terrible price for the trade in then? You might have mentioned it previously, but what about waiting for what you want to be on a dealer's lot? I ordered from the factory, but there was no commitment that I buy when it came in and I didn't put any money down. They did this because I wasn't ordering a strange combination, they knew they could sell it.
spin1966
I have considered selling my used vehicle myself and know I would get a lot moe than what a dealer would offer me, just thinking it would be a hassel. How was your experience with it?
choff1138
I have considered selling my used vehicle myself and know I would get a lot moe than what a dealer would offer me, just thinking it would be a hassel. How was your experience with it? With the internet - it is so much easier to sell by owner. I had a bidding war on my 99 escort that the dealer would have basically made me pay him to take because there was no book value - but the car was in perfect shape and ran great. But when it starts at 10k - after 11 years there is no value left. The dealer would have made a pretty penny off of it too. All just depends on what you have and what kind of shape it is in. hunter4814
My salesman is an old friend of mine that I've been dealing with for 20 years now. I tried to sell my trade (2001 Honda Odyssey, 150K miles, excellent condition) privately, but didn't get any good offers after about a month. I decided to take it to the dealer to see what they would give me. After offering me what I thought was an excellent price, I stuck at it and was actually (through some bluffing, etc) was able to get more than I would have gotten privately (keeping in mind that if you sell privately, you still have to pay taxes on that portion of the new car, but if you trade, you don't have to pay taxes on that portion since it's taken off the purchase price directly). That was about two weeks ago, and I'm not expecting my edge for another two weeks. So, I was able to lock in a price. If it makes a difference, I'm getting x-plan pricing through my company, so there are no negotiations on the price of the edge itself - just x-plan minus any incentives at the time of delivery. Hmmm, don't know where you're from, but in Ontario, I was able to order an 11 MKX and get the incentive that was offered at the time. I actually get the choice of what was offered in September or what will be current when it comes in (about 2 weeks time). As far as the trade goes, try to sell it on your own, then put it through the dealer as a trade through. It will save you taxes. At least it works that way in Ontario. Burtman
I ordered a 2011 Limited two weeks ago and I locked in my trade in. I was told not to put more then three thousand more miles on it and if I was getting close to the three thousand mark to give them a call and they would give me a loaner(free) plus I also locked in the rebates that were offered two weeks ago. I think we have determined that is a difference between Canada and US ordering.

akirby
Basically it's up to the dealer. They'll usually give you a price that's good for X days and/or within X miles as stated above. Of course they reserve the right to change it if they find the vehicle in a different condition than when it was appraised. But usually that's not a problem.
