Loosecannon
Well, it's been awhile since i've posted on here. I have a 2008 Edge, Black,... that i have lowered on H&K springs, sitting on 22" black Giovanna wheels. Added fender vents, blacked out the front grill, fog light bezels, rear emblem, and added a exhaust system ending in 4" black exhaust tips. Also added a Weapon-R air intake and full stereo system,.. shwooo, thats a mouth full. Oh and also added some LED lighting to the front. Anyways,.. my edge is currently sitting in the bodyshop, waiting to be repainted.... dark graphite grey in a satin finish. For those of you not sure what a satin finish is,.. it's almost flat. No gloss. Just a tiny bit of a satin sheen to it. Should have it back in about 1 and a half weeks. Pics to follow Then i'm thinking of adding HID's. -Cannon Attached is a current pic of how it sits

igcitng
I was at the Bloomington Gold Corvette show in June and saw a Vette with a black satin paint job and it was stunning, I could not take my eyes off of it.
george.arnold
That's going to look great. I've always liked gray paint jobs. One of the best Ford colors is Dark Shadow Gray. That satin is going to really pop!
igcitng
What is the care and feeding of a paint job like this? Is it as durable as other paint?
Loosecannon
Thanks guys, yes i agree, and think with the body lines of the Ford Edge, that it should pull off that type of paint job excellent! The up keep and maintenance isn't much different than a normal paint job. Alot of people think that those satin type paint jobs don't have a clear coat, but they do. From what i was told, you pick out a nice shiny paint job, and then the clear coat that is added is the "satin", and thats what dulls it. So it does have a clear coat and could be waxed. The down side.... you can NOT buff out scratch marks etc,... you would make those areas shiney,.. so then you'd have a shiney spot on a dull car. -Cannon I should go in tomorrow to pick out paint. feelin edgy
Sorry, that is just not a look I care for. I have been conditioned my entire life to try and keep the finish on my car from looking like that.
igcitng
I forgot to ask-are you keeping the same wheels? Will you have a satin finish on the Edge and a shiny finish on the wheels?
Loosecannon
I'm keeping my wheels... they will remain the same, flat black. I went in today and picked out the color. A test panel will be shot tomorrow,.. if it looks good, i'll give it the go-ahead, and the vehicle will be painted Monday,.. might take a few days after that, then i should have it back..... also, the little side pillar pieces will be painted the Dark Satin grey as well. Front grill will remain flat black, and the fog light bezels as well. Thats the latest news as of now -Cannon
Loosecannon
Sorry, that is just not a look I care for. I have been conditioned my entire life to try and keep the finish on my car from looking like that. No worries. You are probably older as well. If your the age of my dad then i'm sure you share the same ideologies as him. Back when my dad was young,... the cheapest car you could buy came with black wheels... so in his opinion why would ya PAY to make them look that way.... same kinda applies to the flat paint job as well. It kinda goes against why you buy a "new shiny" car. But it is a new modern trend that many find appealing. But, to each their own. Don't get me wrong,.. i love a shiny car with chrome wheels as well... i'm just on this blacked out, satin kick.... it's just my thang' Respectfully, -Cannon
Loosecannon
FOR THOSE WHO CARE: Checked in at the body shop today,.. they shot one fender as a test panel to see if i liked the color,... it was alittle too shiney and had to much metallic in it. Had them reshoot it with a flatter matte finish and knock the metallic out of it.... rechecked it 3 hrs later when the paint had dried, and we are almost there! I was telling the paint guy that i wished it was just a hair darker and a hair less shiney even still, so he places a paint sample right next to it that he had found, and BAM that was it! So he is reshooting the fender for the 3rd time with that last color that was on the paint sample, and i'll check it out on Monday. I'm pretty sure it is gonna be exactly what i'm looking for, in which case they will then shoot the whole car, and i should have it in my hands by Friday of next week. Well, thats all there is to update you guys on. If the fender looks good on monday, i'll take a pic and post it to give you guys a idea of what's in store. -Cannon

Bookworm
Great !! Thanks for the update. Looking forward to seeing it !! I was at the Mercedes dealership yesterday and they had a C63 AMG with the matte finish paint. It was silver and in the sun you could still see it was a metallic paint but it had no shine. I thought it looked great but my wife wasn't that crazy about it. It really is a personal preference. The salesman said it took special cleaners to take care of it because it would be easy to cause it to turn shiny if it was treated incorrectly which would require repainting. It was a $4000 option! Loosecannon
They are still working on getting the shine to the right level.... i go back tomorrow to check the test panel that they keep repainting to see if they have it where i want it. They shot it once and it was too dull,... kinda funny tho, it still had a clear cloat, and when ya handled the fender and touched it and everything, finger prints and smudges didn't show up. Kinda cool. Yes you do need to make sure with a matte finish that you DO NOT buff it, or you will make it shiney where it should be matte. Wouldn't say you need "special" cleaners tho... of course at a mercedes dealership, i'm sure they say you need special everything FOR everything. lol -CAnnon

I think that anyone here that says they do not like the look would actually be impressed and like it if they saw it. Maybe it is not right for them but could appreciate it for what it is. When I saw the vette at the show I was shocked to see a paint job like that, did not know it existed but really liked it. If I had a vette I would likely stay with a traditional paint job but I still drooled over the satin. Hurry up and get it painted we want to see it! Loosecannon
Ok, we finally got the right color picked out. After about 10 repaints on this fender, they finally got the darkness, and the sheen the way i wanted. In the pic attached is the front fender we have been painting, and repainting, and repainting, and.... anyways, finally.... the left section of the fender is what the color will look like. The right section of the fender is actually two other paint jobs, with different levels of gloss to them. So again,... the left portion of the fender is what the final color will be. The Edge goes into the booth tomorrow for the entire paint job! -Cannon
