Mine is more like a touch type switch, not mechanical. Takes a second or so for it to work. I still activate it occasionally.

I accidentally turned on the emergency flasher the first day I owned the car and have not done it since. I have to say that I've never accidentally turned on the emergency flashers in ANY other car that I've owned so I certainly agree that it's not well placed. That being said, I can't say that I find it to be an issue for me. For awhile, I had to be a little more careful/conscious about not hitting it when I used the touch screen, but it soon became second nature to avoid it.
