How safe is the Navigation SD card?

Still waiting on delivery but was wondering:

If the Navigation SD card goes in the SD card reader that is located below the armrest is it prone to theft?

The reader is supposedly spring loaded so it would appear that the card could be removed without powering on the car.

Does this ease of access mean that to be cautious we should remove the NAV SD card when valet parking etc...?

I would hope some kind of display indicating "NO NAV" would appear upon turning the car on if the card is missing.

Also the cards are supposedly encrypted. But, can a copy be made provided it is for use in the same vehicle (vin)?

Someone's already thought and written about hoisting the SD cards (not that it'll do 'em much good).

I did read somewhere there is a No SD Card msg displayed... dunno exactly when that occurs, tho. If you're not using the nav system, you can listen to music (or grab photos) off an SD card.

Not sure if you can mak a copy (that will work).

Did you just try to load it up in Windows and copy/paste to a new card or use backup software or ???

Hey

I have tried simple copy and paste through Windows with error messages - cannot copy files - no surprise there, but even trying to clone the disk with disk cloning software produces a sd card that the navigation system will not read.

Ford has referred me to Navteq, the software mapping company and guess what, Navteq refers me back to Ford software engineers. Heard this story before?

Does anyone know if Nav can be added to a 2011 SEL that didn't come ordered that way from the factory but has the MyFord Touch system? I would think you would order the SD card and have the dealer install.

There has been a mix of answers on that - I don't know if there has been a definitive "have done it and it works" answer. Let us know if you do it.

Would a non Nav equipped vehicle have the required GPS needed in order for it to work? Just guessing but I expect the SD card only has the maps and such.

The Sync TDI on non nav equipped cars is using Gps guidance so it appears they already have the gps on board. I was told at my dealer service dept that ford has not released an upgrade yet.

HELP - Just purchased our 2011 Edge Limited with NAV and the SD card will not install, Error says something like, root directory can not be found. Also there is NO 'SD CARD ERROR" or any other reference in the upper right corner of the screen. The dealer is no help. We paid for "Voice Activated Navigation System" but it appears it was never loaded. Any comments advise please.

The dealer is no help?? If you bought the car with nav then they need to get it working!

Who is no help? The salesman, service dpt, or who?

Don't let them push you around. They have to fix it for you

Since it was a Saturday, there was no one in service who had any experience that could help. They actually have another Edge Lmtd on the lot with the same problem, as we tested that one as well. We told them they had until Friday the 22nd to fix the car or else we were going to give them back the car and they agreed to keep our trade in (RAV4) in case they could not make it right by Friday. I've even sent the salesman numerous posting I found online, such as:

"“What I have learned to date is that the Nav system software comes embedded in the vehicle and your LFD (Local Ford Dealer) can activate it. It requires the dealer activates the Nav option. I have researched this as my 2011 Edge Limited came with factory Nav (have the SD card and everything) yet it was not activated so I have no Nav! I wanted to research BEFORE I take it into my LFD as they are really struggling with this new MyTouch system and don't have the answers yet. I'm taking it in soon for the fix and will post my results.”

He had to contact Ford and they walked him through the procedure for activating the Nav system and the Sirius info system. Tell the dealer to have the tech call Ford support and they can tell him what to do. I saw the tech using a USB flash drive to load something on the system to get it to work. It can be done but the Tech will have to contact Ford Support for info on what to do, the tech told me that whoever he was talking to at Ford said he was having to help the techs at dealers several times a day with this problem, so if your dealer can get to the right person at Ford they should be able to tell them have to fix your problem.""

Which seems to be our problem. We love the car otherwise and hope they can make it right.

Got a call from the dealer tonight. They were able to "fix" the other limited that was also not accepting the SD card today. They said it should take 5-6 hours to "fix" the problem (slow download). Made an appointment for Wednesday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will report back with the results. I WANT MY NAV TO WORK!!!!

NAV update. Took 4 hours and we've got our NAV !!! One minor issue, after getting home and trying to sync my phone, the "system" locked up. After turning the car off and back on, had a blank screen for about 3 minutes and I was freaking out, finally there was a message on the screen that say System update in progress, Sync/Microsoft. After about 2-3 minutes, we were back in action. Whew!
