ThinLine
I have noticed some spots on the driveway recently from our Edge. 2008 with 35,000 miles. I have been using mobil 1 with motorcraft filter since 5,000 miles. I thought that maybe I tightened the filter too much or just had a defective oil filter. I changed the oil and filter @35,000 and checked under her yesterday and I can see a line of oil on the filter from where the filter gasket mates to the metal ring. I inspected the ring where the gasket mates to and it seems fine. Anyone else experiencing this issue ? It is not alot of oil ......maybe 5 or 6 drops within 5,000 mile between changes. Thanks ! akirby
Next time you change the filter, wipe off the surface where the gasket meets the metal. Make sure no part of the old gasket is left and it's smooth. Put a thin film of oil on the new filter gasket and hand tighten until the gasket touches, then only go another 3/4 turn or so. Run the engine and check for leaks and tighten the filter 1/2 turn as needed after that. Over-tightening can also cause leaks. If that doesn't work then have the dealer check it - might be a defect of some kind. Also make sure it's actually leaking from the filter and not from somewhere above it. ThinLine
I always clean the surface where the gasket mates and coat the new gasket with fresh oil before install.....thanks for the repies. I did inspect above the area where the filter goes and all is clean and dry. It is definitely coming from the filter gasket area. Goldy
I always clean the surface where the gasket mates and coat the new gasket with fresh oil before install.....thanks for the repies. I did inspect above the area where the filter goes and all is clean and dry. It is definitely coming from the filter gasket area. I've noticed the same thing...a drop or two on the filter when I change it..as if it was dripping just ever-so slowly. This has not always happened...just every so often. I have not noticed any drop in oil level per the dipstick when there are a couple of drips on the filter. It just about has to come from the oil filter's gasket. why??? don't know.. I to always clean the 'oil filter mounting surface', as well as coat the oil filter gasket w/ oil. I'm probably not helping, but in my opinion...if it's just a drop or 2 every so often, and there's no noticable level difference per the dip stick, I'd probably let it go; this one can drive you nuts trying to track down. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck.
