Won't start...

I have a 2009 Ford Edge and I drive very little. I have only 8600 miles on it. I really like the car, but am very frustrated with it and am sorry now I bought an American car.

The problem started after I had the oil and filter changed for the first time recently. I will go to start the car and I can turn the key and the various lights will come on, but the car won't start. I have taken the key out, tried again and nothing. I have tried stepping on the gas and turning the key, stepping on the break and nothing, turning the wheel and nothing happens. We have checked the connections to the battery and they look good.

I have had it to 1 mechanic and the dealership and they both tell me it is a brand new car and they can find nothing wrong with it. It seems to me it is something electronic. Why else will the key turn in the ignition and the instrument panel lights will come on, but the engine won't turn over?

I am so frustrated I am thinking of trading the car in!

If Ford doesn't know what is wrong with the car, what can I do?

Does anyone know what the problem could be or how I can get Ford to fix the problem? I feel like I am doing all the work here and they just shrug their shoulders and tell me the car is fine.

Usually, after 3 - 10 tries, the car will start. But it is very scary when I am miles away from home alone with the stupid car that won't work.

Any suggestions on this problem?

Thank you!

Neutral safety switch??Try moving shift lever, good luck Marty

+1 on that, make sure it's in Park and if so move down the Neutral and try to crank, if no joy go back to Park and try again and wiggle the shift selector... I think those switches are made better now than in years past but you never know.

Let us know how it goes.

Better to have an American car that won't start, than a foreign one that won't stop.

I'm very happy that I bought American - an Edge.

Could also be the security system - may not be reading the key correctly. Have you tried it with a different key? How often does it happen? If your dealer won't work with you to figure it out, go find another dealer that will. There's not much Ford can do since the dealers do the work. Keep trying.

Is there any noise coming from the car at all when you turn the key? I know the engine isn't turning over, but any kind of clicking noise, or the sound of a starter trying to engage? Lift the hood, open the fuse box on the dirver's side and listen for the starter relay to pull click. I believe the relay for the starter is in the fuse box under the hood.

It's possible that your starter is shot. I had a motor go bad on my washing machine after 2 weeks of using it. It would occasionally turn on and run fine, but then it stopped, it wouldn't start again. Turns out there was a problem with the motor that caused a "dead spot" and if the motor stopped in that particular area, it woulnd't start up again.

This doesn't sound like it's a huge problem. Since you can eventually get it started, it sounds like either a loose connection, or dirty electrical contacts. Hopefully you have another dealer close by that you can take the car to. At least with it being a 2009, it's still ocvered under warranty.

When I had my Blazer I started having the exact same thing happen. It would start or not start intermittently, and when it would not start I would push it and push it and it would eventually start. Also, I had accessory power it just would not turn over. What it turned out to be was the electrical/battery harness (right word?) that is buried deep in the engine compartment had broken and depending on the way the wind was blowing there was either enough or not enough connection to start it. I had a fairly new battery but this problem also killed the battery and I had to replace it too.

Mate American car that won't start need no brakes in my opinion.....by the way,,my 2011 Edge is dead ( won't start at all) for last 14 days and we all over here scratching our heads what's wrong with it. Personally I do not see cars as American or foreign since they all contain so many international parts it made them blend together, not to mention fact that your as well as mine Edge was made in Canada :)
