Wow! Where did you order your edge? It's clear that it doesn't matter when you order.

I think ford needs to work on the ordering process. I would expect the kind of status feedback that I get from amazon...doubt that will ever happen though. Not all dealers and/or customers are created equal

But you don't order vehicles from Ford. In fact it would be illegal for Ford to allow you to order a vehicle from them due to state franchise laws. The dealer orders the vehicle and it's up to the dealer how and when they put in the order, how much allocation they have, what priority they assign, etc. - all out of Ford's hands.

Additionally, you ordered a vehicle that has not even begun shipping yet and because of Ford's commitment to quality even they don't know when that will start. Hopefully any day now but nobody knows. It is totally dependent on what problems occurred and when and whether your vehicle was affected.

Ford has addressed some of these problems with retail order verification where they build pre-sold vehicles first and they don't count against the dealer's allocation. But you really have to rely on the dealer. They usually have far more info available to them than they're willing to share with customers (or in some cases they're just ignorant).

This is where I think there needs to be a rework on the way new cars are sold. I should not have to deal with a dealer. This is an old way of doing business that needs to change.

I'm beginning to think that my order that I thought was submitted in may, probably didn't get submitted until I had CS call the dealer Monday.

I placed my order for 2011 limited Edge on 7/27. As of today, 2 weeks later, the order is at Ford but has not been submitted / received by the plant. At that point, CRC, mentioned that delivery is 6 - 10 weeks once that happens. So without a VIN# as of yet you will be looking at October delivery at the earliest.

No problem - just go to every state in the U.S. and convince them to repeal the automotive franchise laws that have been on the books since the 50s and 60s.

Of course they're antiquated, but until they change the law there is nothing Ford can do about it. Every time they try to do something they get slapped with a lawsuit. And they usually don't win.

I hear what you're saying. I just long for the day when I can bypass dealerships.

Bypass the dealerships by going to work for Ford, moving to Michigan and working hard to get into management so your vehicles will be delivered through a Company Garage. Otherwise, you are the customer of a dealership who has certain responsibilities and siginificant authority to market Ford products in their trade area. You might imagine there would be a better system, but as my friend akirby suggests, it's the system we will have for many decade to come, (or until the Imperial Federal Government takes over the manufacturing and distribution of all consumer goods as part of the new Utopia.)

Not all dealers and/or customers are created equal

Dealers have a very strong presence through their dealer councils with Ford. They pretty well ensure they are "treated" equally, so don't feel sorry for them. All dealers are given allocaation for their vehicles based primarily on their sales and current inventory,

Within their allocations, dealerships pretty well determine which customer orders will get the higher priority. You just need to know what to ask.

So, what do we ask? I "ordered" one on 7/23 from my dealer - got a copy of the DORA, but still no confirmation or VIN number? CRC even called the dealership for me to try and help me find out info on the status. She was told that they have not gotten any information back from Ford and it can take up to 45 days for that and then 45 days till the car is actually done.

Is there a way to find out if one dealership is better than the other as far as special orders are concerned?

I love all the info I am getting from this forum. Thank you to everyone that passes on info.

Ask the dealership what their allocation is, how many they have ordered, what priority they will put on your order (10 is best) , if they will place orders after yours with a higher (numeriaclly lower) priority, if your order has any commodities that are controlled (short supply) - and hope they tell you the truth.

At the beginning of the model year, almost every dealership will get at least 1 unit scheduled for introduction. That may wipe out any hope of getting in the first two weeks of scheduling, even if you placed your order early and your dealership submitted it to Ford when the order banks opened up. If your dealership is allocated 3 for August, 3 for Sept. and 3 for Oct - (and they are all ordered with the same priority) and your order is number 10, you may have a long wait.

If your order was placed with a 20 priority and is the first one submitted to Ford, but later they place 9 orders with a priority of 10, all those orders will be scheduled before yours.

Will they tell you they don't have current allocation? Will they tell you that they will push your order back if the dealers uncle wants one now? Will they check their weekly news bulletin (Friday evenings) to see what options, trim, colors are in short supply? Perhaps, especially if you ask.

Customer A might order and get their vehicle in the 6-8 weeks time frame while customer B (ordering on the same day) might have to wait 12-15 weeks. Most of this controlled by the dealerships involved, even though they may try to pass it off as a Ford problem of some kind.

Adding to what Grey sez...

Dealers can place a 'custom' order or a 'stock' order. I understand that the factory is not accepting 'custom' orders - or at least just recently they weren't. The likelyhood of the factory picking up the order if it's submitted as stock instead of custom is higher in these first couple months of 2011 production.

Awesome - I do know it is a priority 10 - but being in Alaska - I would guess allocation amounts are low for all our dealerships. Hope I was early enough on the list for ordering. I will try to be patient, but it isn't one of my strengths, especially as I am currently driving my Grandpa's saturn when my husband and I have to have a second car. I miss my 99 escort already.

Thanks both of you.

Well even that's not a sure bet. The very first production units of a new model are usually allocated to management, but that's because they usually have the most quality issues. Once vehicles start shipping, management vehicles are given the lowest priority for repairs and shipping. I've seen these vehicles and you would not want one, even if you got it early.

After the initial start of a new model, management vehicles are usually given the lowest priority. A manager I know recently waited over 2 months for delivery of his Flex, even though it was the middle of the model year.

I keep reminding myself that it's a good thing to not be in the first wave of Edges coming off the line.

But I still can't wait!!

I starting building my 2007 Edge online for many, many months before they ever hit the dealerships. I drooled daily over my Virtual Edge! We ended up finally get the first one our local dealership had on the lot on December 26th, 2006, because I just couldn't wait to have one built. I was very happy with my AWD Edge SEL Plus. It only ever had one problem which was a faulty valve stem, which they later recalled. Not too bad for the first batch of a model, of the first model year ever. I would still be driving my Edge if some (insert long list of profane adjectives here) GUY hadn't came into my lane head on and crashed into me. My curtain airbags deployed on both sides, the whole driver's side was smashed up, the real suspension was broken and the Edge was totaled. The car truly saved my life.

ANYWAY, I am currently without a car, driving my husband's Excursion until I make a purchase decision. I wasn't ready for this. I wasn't done with MY EDGE! So now I debate, do I take the insurance money and go get another 07-09 Edge, or do I order a 2011, or do I try to wait it out until I can actually drive the 2011 to make my decision. Mind you, my husband must continue to drive his "hunting truck" back and forth to work while I am in his truck, lol, asking me every day, "when can I have MY truck back?" We stopped by the dealership last week to see when they would be in, and one of the sales-people said August 12th. Well, still not there, and from what I'm reading, i may be a while yet. I just don't how much longer I can put off a vehicle purchase. We have to get life back to normal around here.

Wait for the 2011 - it's worth it. I think they started shipping today so they should have some in stock within the next 3-4 weeks.

The schedule build week is 8/16/10 for now.

"...for now." are the key words

I was just informed that my week of 8/16 build date has changed to the :censored: week of 8/30. So word of caution... don't get attached to a given date.

I was hoping to get delivery before Oct 1. Now I'm not so sure I'll make it.

I just checked again today with CRC and they said my car is scheduled to be built Aug 30 and has been assigned to a plant and that I could check back in a week and they should be able to tell me the mode of shipping and an estimated ship date. Wahoo!!!!!

So then I thought I'd call my dealer to see what information they have. The dealer said they still show a TBD on my car and that they would try to find out more information. Crazy! I did ask the dealer if the they would be getting "stock" models before mine and he said no that mine was the first order. We'll see.

I just can't wait to drive it!

Great news! I think this is the first delivery date we've seen on this forum.

I'm still waiting on VIN. I'm thinking my dealer didn't submit my order in May like they said they were doing.

I'm getting conflicting statuses when I call dealership, 1-800, or twitter. The person on Twitter seems the most knowledgeable.

The 1-800 rep lobbed me off to the dealership to get my status. That was rude.

Submitting the order puts it in the que so when the dealership has allocation, it can be selected for scheduling (assuming it has the highest priority).

Your selling dealership is responsible for communications with you regarding build and delivery timing.

The Ford scheduling system updates on Thur. evenings.

Sometimes the CRC will check status for you, but it's not their responsibility. They should refer you back to your selling dealership for status. They may be getting so many calls, that their bosses have told them to send us back to the dealership. Plus, dealers may be complaining that customers are going around them to get scheduling info.

The dealerships have the responsibility and access to the information (within their dealership and on-line with Ford) needed to communicate with the customers. Ford personnel don't control the priority placed on orders by the dealerships, nor do they know what orders might be placed later by the dealership with a higher priority. That is why your best source is your selling dealer. Perhaps your sales manager can explain it to you in more detail.
