epsanto2
My two cents worth..... Tarzan, Sgt Preston, Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, Boston Blackie, and Dragnet (Sgt. Joe Friday... talk about scared straight). The Untouchables, Andy Devine, Swamp Fox, Daniel Boone, Zorro, and Superman with Steve Reeves. Gangbusters and The Shadow on radio. Color tv was a tri-colored piece of cellophane put over the front of the screen.... strange how the sky was always blue even in a thunderstorm or if the camera angle was other straight on, the sky was green, or the grass was blue. Sitting on the porch swing watching the summer rain, ollie oxen free, and red light, green light, dynamite boom! Ahhh the good old days!! For most, your senior trip was to SE Asia not Cancun or Rio or Canada. You took a loan out for a car or a house. Credit and credit cards were for emergencies.... a double latte was not an emergency. When my niece was little, she told me our TV set was broke. I asked why and she politely told me the color was gone.... an 8 year old 19 inch B&W RCA. Now my computer monitor is bigger than that. Now I watch HD and back a show up if I miss a play or line. Retired, living a good life, but still miss parts of the days when.....
cal3thousand
That was a great post! I'm just north of 30, but I hear ya loud and clear! It's amazing just the differences between my brother and myself in 9 years. He has no idea about times before cellphones. If you wanted to call a girl, you had to make sure she was going to be home to talk to her. And you always ran into the chance of someone else picking up the phone first. I had internet as a teen, but we used dial-up that would knock you off if someone decided to call or pick up the telephone. Before cordless phones were ubiquitous, you had to sit in the room that had a phone. Talking to a girl on the line with your family members in the same room was super awkward. Anyone here carry a pager/beeper back in the day? Remember stopping to find a payphone and making sure you had change? So many things that we have nowadays that make kids' lives so much easier. I like your comment about the library vs Internet. I bet half the kids out there don't even know what the Dewey decimal system does! Which reminds me of an observation someone pointed out to me before: Kids nowadays know to click the little blue floppy disk on the top of a menu to save a file without even knowing what a floppy disks is! You are just a baby lol. Amazing how we survived without cell phones. I had a bag phone for college but it cost $10.00 a minute to use it, so only had it for extreme emergencies. I remember the days of waiting for calls, and that was before caller id so you didn't know who it was and my sister and I would fight over the phone. I did not meet a computer until college and even then it was not mainstream, it had the large floppy disk. Spent a lot of time at the library to do reports going through encyclopedias and microfiche. Don't miss those days and don't wish them on any kid. If I had a kid I would feel good knowing they had a cell phone to reach me and that they could do school work without struggling to find information. They may not know Dewey Decimal and other things we do however they have their own modern day challenges to meet and new and better things to learn. Even the planets have changed since I learned them in school haha.

Hmm, carried a pager for several years. Yes, always a big challenge finding a working phone booth. I still swear I want to gather up every pager I can find and toss them into the casket of whoever created the pager. My goal, keep sending a message to each pager so I could torment the guy for eternity. I've spent 37 years in the computer industry and worked on a lot of "stuff". Anyone remember the Compuserver vs AOL debates?

Back in the 40's and 50's, I took pride in being able to ID every make & model of car--- somewhere in the late 60's I gave it up--- took up too much of my energy ---
