New Edge... question about rim durability

Hello!

I just bought my new Edge and absolutely LOVE it. It's my first SUV/crossover, so I'm still adjusting to the size difference. I've own several Fords (Mustangs, Thunderbird, Mustang, Cougar). With 117 miles on it I decided to take it on vacation. It is an awesome vehicle for traveling! While in an unfamiliar area, I was trying to make a turn from the shoulder, which suddenly dropped off maybe 8 - 10 inches. I was going straight at the time so I'm not too worried about the alignment, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me how much abuse the 18" wheels should be able to take. I have the wheels with the chrome cap on them. It seems like I feel a slight rhythm at 40 mph now, but I might be just a little paranoid that I hurt my baby. And since I'm in an unfamiliar area, it just might be the road, since I haven't been back on the freeway, yet. So do I have something to worry about or am I just being paranoid? Are there 'abuse ratings' for rims anywhere?

Thank you,

Red Devil

If you live where it never snows......your good. If not, the outer clear coated aluminum rim will pit and clearcoat will peel off. Had ours replaced twice under warranty. They are a steel wheel so they should be durable. Sometimes, if the wheel weights are placed inside the rim...(stick-ons) you can get a slight vibration. Take it in and have the wheels balanced and if the vibration remains......you have other issues...maybe brake rotors or something in the driveline.

You should be worried about the alignment and also about the wheel balance and the possible chance for a bent rim. I recommend that you get the alignment checked and the tire balanced , when they balance it they will be able to tell if is is bent or not. I wouldn't be surprised if the alignment was out also.

Thank you, L1TECH and ThinLine, for your responses. I didn't post a response sooner because the WIFI in my hotel went down, but I took your advice and took the Edge into a dealership while on vacation. They test drove it and said it seemed to handle just fine and didn't believe there was a problem. On the way home it also seemed to ride the same once I was able to get back on the freeways, so I'm confident I didn't cause any problems. I know had I been in a car there would have been. I still love my Edge. And I'm impressed with whatever the the dealership puts on the painted surface in the form of wax or polish. The bugs I accumulated on vacation just rinsed away, no soap required!

Thanks again! Red Devil

My wife and I purchased an '07 Edge FWD last weekend, it too has some corrosion around the outside of the rims. It's not really an issue to me, as it's not that bad. I've been told by several people that it's a rather common problem with the 18 inch wheels. So far, I have to say I absolutely LOVE this vehicle. With 38K miles, it still feels tight, rides great, and ZERO squeaks&rattles. I just wish I got to drive it more. Ha! It's alright though, Looking to by a 2011 Mustang GT next spring. Permanent smile. :shift:

Ford will replace all 4 wheels if you have corrosion on the outer edges and are still under warranty
