lazerred95em
Hey everyone, I purchased a 08 edge for my wife. Money was tight had to keep our payments low so we got a 2008 SE edge. Has nothing for upgrades but its affordable and my wife loves it. Heres my questions, im a 20 year mechanic so any work is no problem. Id like to possibly change it from FWD to the AWD system (even tho its not the best). Seems id need the rear diff, rear axles, mounting hardware, almost seems like there are 3 small driveshafts as well? (just looking at a picture) Has anyone done this? Would i need a new tranny? Sensors? We just got it yesterday, i havent even looked on it on a lift at work yet. Another thing would be wiring harness... is it Prewired? OR ould i need a AWD wiring harness's and new ecu from a awd edge? Just curious if this has been done before. Id also like to buy a pulled oem navigation from ebay, their about 500 bucks. Will it plug and play? Also did ford prewire these cars? like for front fog lamps or If i was to get a new steering wheel with radio controls or for power seats and other oem upgrades. LMK guys I would really appreciate it!

lazerred95em
Seeing as I paid 13k for this one with 16000 miles vs 20k+ plus for upgraded models with 40,000 miles or more our monthly payments are very low just what we needed. Thats just how they are in our area anyway yes I shopped around. For people w ith real answers there is a smashed edge near me AWD. I know someone who works through the yard that has it right now and can pretty much get the AWD system, well driveshafts back. But before i spent the money id like to know if this is even doable without major tweaks. What exactly is needed? I wont get mine on a lift till monday so i was hoping a edge member would beable to help out. Edited March 28, 2010 by lazerred95em

akirby
You're forgetting the PTU and possibly the transmission or parts to mate them. Driveshaft, rear diff, half shafts plus all of the wiring for the PTU and the rear differential. Then you'd have to get the PCM reflashed with an AWD version. And I'm sure at least a dozen other things. Is it really worth the trouble?
Waldo
On top of what akirby mentioned, the AWD uses a separate control module which isn't likely pre-wired. Plus the suspension and stability control are tuned differently for an AWD, so if you want it to handle correctly you'll need new springs, shocks and stabilizer bars. And yes you will need to change out the entire transmission or at least the cover and parts associated with the installation of the PTU and linkshaft. And all that work just for worse fuel economy? Doesn't seem like a good idea to me. As for the other stuff, Ford doesn't generally "pre-wire" anything. They separate the options into bundles so that they can make 4 or 5 different wiring harnesses. So all SE likely get the same harness, so if fog lights and Nav weren't available on the SE, the wires won't be there. L1TECH
I did an AWD conversion once on a customers Eagle Talon.....never again will I convert another vehicle to AWD. it is too much of a hassle. You are really better off buying the drivetrain you want as opposed to converting it. The other stuff can be done although you may run into harness issues. It would also be helpful if you had access to an IDS for reconfiguring modules. I know money is tight but you would have been much better off waiting and saving for the vehicle that you want. When all is said and done you will end up paying more for the options that you want having installed them yourself as opposed to buying the vehicle with them already installed
lazerred95em
If its a matter of swapping tranny's then its not gonna happen. Im not going to bother doing that vehicle has less than 20k on it. That sucks. Ford used to prewire some models i've generally worked on mustangs and certain years we're prewired until ford got cheap. My wife is bugging me to get her the upgraded steering wheel, she hates "the way" shes gotta reach across the dash i guess it is a little uncomfortable. But if its not prewired then blah, that ideas down the drain too. The only thing that seems easy is grabbing a ford nav radio to jazz this thing up a bit i guess. Well if it plugs right in, which it seems like it would searching some other posts. Thanks guys
akirby
i've generally worked on mustangs and certain years we're prewired until ford got cheap. Seems to me that putting in wiring that would go unused 99.99% of the time is just wasteful. Doesn't sound cheap to me. Although I do find it funny that you're calling someone else cheap given your situation with this vehicle.......
