Safe to buy domestic again?

Unsure

Recommended Posts

I have only owned foreign SUV's (Honda, Toyota) for the last 15 years. I am currently thinking of buying the new 2011 Ford Edge. What will my ownership experience be like? Will I experience a relatively trouble free ownership experience as I have found with the Honda's? I need an AWD should I be concerned with the PTU problem? If I have a problem how will the service compare to what one receives at a Honda dealership? Sorry for all the questions but I think I am willing to buy a domestic vehicle and take a chance to move to Ford but these are the hurdles I am facing. If anyone has any insight in moving from a Honda to a Ford experience I would greatly appreciate it. Bottom line, can I be fairly assured that the experience of owning a Ford will be as relatively worry free if I switch back to a domestic vehicle?

Thank you.

Hi Unsure. :D According to JD Powers and other recognized experts on automotive quality, Ford's quality is now at least the equal of Honda, Toyota and the other imports.

Concerning the "PTU' problem: Every vehicle has a certain percentage of defects. The vast majority of AWD Edge's and MKX's do not have PTU problems.

Concerning Dealer reliability: By Federal law, Dealerships for all automakers are independent franchises. So like all automakers, Dealer reliability depends on the individual attitude of the Dealership. Ask others for recommendations as to the best Ford Dealer Service Departments in your area.. And check out the Service Department before you buy. People often make the mistake of thinking that the relationship with the Salesperson is the most important aspect. Well, once you purchase, you will usually not deal with the Salesperson again until you purchase another new vehicle (if they are even still there). But you will see the Service Personnel for scheduled maintenance for the life of your vehicle, so they are the important people to get to know.

In my opinion (and the opinion of automotive quality experts) you can be fairly assured that the experience of owning a Ford will be at least as worry free as any other vehicle, foreign or domestic.

Good luck. :beerchug:

the ptu problem was an easy fix (of course it took us 3 day's to get it fixed, luckily i have spare car/cars/motorcycle) so it wasn't no biggie.

as for their service dept. (i was 50/50. they dealt w/ the problem, but we also had an AC problem (it wouldn't work) when i gave them the EDGE it was not working so i knew they could diagnose it---when i went to pick it up for the PTU fix/AC fix they told me they couldn't duplicate the problem (strange, because when they drove it into the shop it wouldn't work) they told me my wife and I should "school" ourselves on the climate control. i bit my tongue, rather than cause a problem (a business should NOT talk to a customer that way, even if they thought they were being funny. I love to joke/kid/etc. but it still wasn't funny.

i've owned:

86 Chevy Camaro

87 Chevy IrocZ28 Camaro

95 Chevy Blazer S10

00 Honda Accord LX

01 Dodge RAM 1500

02 Dodge RAM 1500

02 Chevy Tahoe LT

00 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

08 Ford EDGE SEL-plus

08 Hyunda Accent SE

out of these cars the ford EDGE is/was my favorite. (the accent SE is my 2nd best, i love this little thing)

i WOULD buy another Ford product at this point.

My wife and I have owned: 93 Ranger, 98 Ranger, 93 Explorer, 2000 Windstar, 2002 Windstar, 2004 Sport Trac, 2008 Taurus X. 2006 Fusion, and 2007 Edge. Almost NO problems from any of them. These sites by their very nature attract problem reports, but as already said, all the quality surveys out there have Ford looking very good right now. I think you will love your Edge if you purchase one. I would agree that the individual dealer relationship is a key to happiness.

Thank you very much your input is appreciated. I am quite excited to buy a domestic car again so it is nice to hear it will be a "typical" experience. Which is realistic that any car can have issues but the quality of the build is not one of them. Thanks again, I will keep you posted.

I have always owned domestic vehicles, all new vehicles have been Ford, Lincoln or Mercury's since the late 70's, I have owned used Ford and GM products, have driven company vehicles from Ford, GM and Chrysler. out of all of the vehicles I have owned/driven I have only had 3 vehicles that I would say had problems/issues. Ford's quality has improved but I have not had may problems with them in the past. (the problem cars I had were a 1978 Pinto, 2002 Focus SVT and a company vehicle 1999 Windstar )

I have a 05 Ranger with a 3.0 with 152000 miles that runs great !

'56 Pontiac (bad from the getgo)

'62 Ford Station Wagon

'63 Chevy Wagon

'64 Chevy Wagon

'65 Buick Skylark Gran Sport

'65 Plymouth Wagon

'67 Plymouth Wagon

'68 Plymouth Wagon

'70 Chevy Wagon

'73 Chevy Wagon

'75 Chevy Suburban

'77 Chevy Wagon

'80 Chevy Caprice

'83 Ford Van

'85 Ford Van

'87 Mercury Sable

'88 Ford Van

''91 Ford Explorer

'95 Ford Crown Vic

'98 Ford Windstar

'00 Ford Windstar

'03 Hyundai Sante Fe

'04 Toyota Sienna

Does that qualify me as a domestic car buyer? The Hyundai is my wife's car--- And it's as good as anything I have ever owned! The Sienna was mine, but was as uncomfortable as could be---

The Edge is just right so far!
