esckjc
I had a strange problem a couple nights ago. I had driven 30 miles @ 70MPH in 60F weather and parked the car. About 30 minutes later I came out and when I backed out of the driveway, the car seemed like it had the brakes on. In the street I put it into drive, the same situation, the engine was straining but the car not moving very fast. I went around the block (slowly) with no change and the car didn't shift either. I stopped, and when I shifted into reverse, the was a bang or clunk, quite noticeable. I pulled into the driveway, with the engine still straining. The transmission fluid was clear and full. I turned off the car for about 10 minutes, started it again, and the problem was gone and has not returned for 4 days. The car has 43k miles. Hi esckjc. :D I would recommend you make an appointment for service, since your Edge (MKX) is still covered under the 5 year/60,000 mile Powertrain Warranty (at a minimum), even if your original "Bumper to Bumper Warranty" has expired. Of course it never hurts to ask for opinions, but your best bet at getting this properly diagnosed and repaired is at the Dealership. Since there is a chance that a trouble/problem code was stored when this occurred, the sooner you bring it in, the better the chance the code may be recovered before it is lost. Explain in detail exactly what/when/where and how, the symptoms occurred (as you did above). Let us know the outcome. Also, as a side note: Today's cars are are essentially run and controlled by computers, therefore they act like computers. As you found out, turning off the car and restarting essentially performed a "reboot" of the computerized trans/engine functions. In the future, if you can not get to a Ford Dealer immediately while the problem is occurring, pull safely off the road, turn off and restart the car. There is a good chance that this "reboot" will eliminate the problem (at least temporarily) as it did in your case. At least it may save a dangerous drive in a poorly operating vehicle. Good luck. :beerchug: Edited December 2, 2009 by bbf2530

That sounds as if your transaxle was in two gears simultaneously, one of the clutches engaged when it shouldn't have been. That can happen as a result of one of the control solenoid actuators getting stuck either closed or open. Any small bit of debris in the ATF can be the cause and might NEVER reoccur. That's my wife's answer to any problem, turn it off and let it reboot. The funny thing is that's she's right often. I thank everyone for the suggestions. We'll see what happens. I thank everyone for the suggestions. We'll see what happens. Simply turning the ignition off is more like closing IE, Internet Explorer, and then restarting it. Like a PC, A "true" "reboot" would involve turning off ALL power, disconnecting the battery for 10-15 minutes.
new2ford2
I too have this same issue with my 2008 Edge Limited. This started about 6 months or so after I got it. I too "reboot" my car and then it is fine. In another 6 months or so, then it happens again. Most of the time it goes like this: I drive about 15-30 minutes to the store, run into the store for about 10 minutes, come out, start the car and it will barely drive. The rpm needle is racing and the engine gets loud but the car just barely moves. I never heard a loud wham before though. This issue happened again about the beginning of this month and then just again this past weekend. So that is twice this month which is definitely more frequently than normal. I let the dealer have my car for a week at the beginning of the month and they could not get it to act up. They do not have any ideas for me and mentioned that it wouldn't be anything that would leave me stranded. After it happened again this weekend I called them with my story and the mechanic noted my story and just said let us know if it keeps happening more frequently. They are not sure what to do, as the car acts normally for them. History: The first time this happened I took it to a different Ford dealer, they could not duplicate the problem. They said they did do a computer update. I thought that fixed it until about 6 months later it happened again. Also want to mention that my 1st week in my very 1st brand new car ever the brakes were having problems. The car would shake really bad when the brakes were applied. The Ford dealer said the rotors needed turned already??? I said just put new ones on and they did. After hearing me sob about how this was my very 1st brand new car ever and why is this happening to a brand new car. I just couldn't believe it. Would the brakes have anything to do with the other issue I am having? Or not related at all? Overall, did you ever find any answers to your problem? I think our issues sound very similar. Hi new2ford2. :D Just wanted to reply so you don't think you are being ignored. If you check, you will see that the OP (esckjc) has not been back since the last post on December 2. So there is a good chance you will not get any answer. As often happens on these forums, many people come on for a solution to their specific issue, then never come back again. So unfortunately, we never learn if the problem was solved, and more important for helping others, what the solution may have been. Your best course of action would be to keep the Dealer Service Department involved. And if the problem continues, read your Warranty Guide and follow the instructions to get Ford Customer Relations directly involved in the process. According to how good your Dealers Service Department is, if you do not follow through, they may not either. So you need to be proactive in the process. Good luck. :beerchug:
new2ford2
Well, I think our problem has been resolved. Only time will tell though. It happened again, the car was only able to crawl. This time instead of "rebooting" we called Ford to have someone come to the car and look at it only it was later in the evening and no one was available. We had someone follow us as we drove the car slowly to the Dealer. While driving, the Edge gave some specific error codes and eventually opened up and we could get up to 30mph but then went back to 0 again. Once arriving at the dealer we left the car run until morning when the mechanics would get there. Since it seems once the car was turned off in the past the mechanics were never able to find any type of errors. They were able to find the problem in the morning. It was a bad drive shaft sensor. Also, regarding the customer service, we wound up calling Ford Customer Relations. And they are helping us transfer the lease to a different dealer. The previous one in which we bought the car from and took it to originally for this issue failed big time to help fix this issue. They even charged us to look at the issue and didn't fix it. They said they would contact us about reimbursing for the bill but no one called us. We tried to call them and they would not call back or we would somehow get disconnected??? Blahhhhh. Never setting foot in that place again! Probably won't ever see my money back either. Hi new2ford2. :D Just wanted to reply so you don't think you are being ignored.
