Roof Racks

What is the popularity of the roof racks...side rails only; side and cross racks; OR NONE??

It appears that 99% of the pictures I have seen are without any racks...

Is that because they are vehicles with the sun roof, or they are just not considered that good looking for this new Edge??

Thanks

You can get EITHER roofracks or sunroofs, not both. Supposedly the structural strength of the roof can only support one or the other - also there may not be very much clearance between an open roof and the underside of the cross bars.

Supposedly Ford had set targets for how many units will have sunroofs or racks or nothing, i think it is supposed to be abut 40-50% sunroofs over the course of the year. I know most that were ordered down here in FL have the sunroofs and that was a big selling point as a standout feature of the car (its advertised a lot, hence why most pictures have it) - its one reason we found it hard to find the options we wanted, not many were ordered AWD, roofbars w/o nav or rear DVD!

The manual states that the rack has a load capacity of 100# or so. The elliptical crossbars dont come with the car from the factory - you have to buy them aftersales from Ford and are tyically <$100 depending on where you find your deals.

Makes sense that with all the Florida sunshine , a sunroof is the way to go..

I am up in Ontario, Canada, and there may be more standard roofs, here...be interesting to see the stats..

I took the Rail roof rack instead of the BAMR because I prefer to put skis and bikes on top instead of on the trail hitch.

I also have dought about the long term strutral integrity of the body with that big cut-out up there.

I was also affraid of leaks over time with our nasty canadian winter cycle (snow, ice, rain, ice, snow, -30,rain, -30)

Plus it adds weight to an already heavy car.

And I wanted the rear DVD for my son

Plus, I rarely used the sunroof on our X5 (noisy, such cold AC air out of the car, etc.)

For open sky driving, we use my wife Mustang 05 convertible.

Anyway, I am very satisfied with the choice I made but if the BAMR had been available with the roof rail option and the Rear DVD, I would have probably taught more about it.
