dougd
Am having some difficulty getting the goods on what winter tires to put on my Ford Edge. I currently have 245/60/R18 all-season tires on the car. My initial conversation with Costco indicated that I can put on 245/65/R17 winter tires on the car with winter rims X42755. In another conversation with Costco (someone different) indicated that the rims are not wide enough to accept the 245/65/R17 tires. Where can I find the dimensions of the both the tires and rims so that I can find out what's going on? Is there a web site that describes rim sizes? Have found a lot of tire sites, but the rims seem to be a bit of a mystery, particularly the generic part numbers used like X42755. Nothing seems to come up when searching the web. Does anyone know the bolt hole pattern size for the Edge as well? I had heard or read somewhere that it is 5x114.3. True? Our Ford dealership also indicated that it is illegal to mount winter tires without a tire pressure monitoring system. I found this to be strange, because none of the independent tire dealerships ever mentioned having to install tire pressure monitoring sensors as a mandatory requirement. Any help appreciated. PSUFetch
My understanding of the TPMS is that if your wheels don't have the sensors, the indicator on the dashboard will be lit constantly. We don't have costcos around here, but from my understanding they are a big box store (like Walmart). If you're looking for information, you should contact a tire store rather than costco. Get the info from them and use Costco for the cheaper prices. Tire Rack can also help you determine what size wheels will fit. Here's a winter tire sizing guide Tire Rack winter tire size guide Tire Rack recommends a 235/65/17 or if you want to stay with 18" wheels, they recommend 245/60/18 or 235/65/18. According to Tire Rack, bolt spacing is 5-114 I had an extra set of wheels with snoe tires on my Mazda. The summer tires I used were a 225/45/17 and the winter tires were a 195/65/16. Not only were the 16" wheels and tires ceaper than the equivalent 17's, but the narrower width gave me better traction in the snow.

They have a dedicated full time tire shop and they usually know their stuff, although that could vary from store to store.
ILVMYGT
I went through this last year. I got a set of 17” factory take off rims, TPMS and the TPMS reset tool from Ebay. It worked out very good. The rims had the sensor bands already installed and the sensors snapped in. I took the rims with sensors to Costco and had them mounted. The only problem was the tire pressure light came on, on the way home and needed to be rest. It may have been confused since the old tires and rims were in the car. I took the tires out of the car and reset the TPMS and it was fine. The reset tool is easy to use. If you have to put chains (cable) on the car they only fit on the front. I know as I tried to put them on the back and they interfered with the suspension.

All of the web sites provide lots of guidance on comparing one tire size to another. It is the rim size that is causing me some grief. I have found nothing on rim sizes and fitment. Costco, in spite of knowing their stuff, provided conflicting guidance on matching 245/65/R17 tires on X42755 rims. One tech said its okay, the other tech said the rim width is too small but did not offer an alternative. I have not been able to find any web site reference that discusses rim sizes and their compatibility with various tire sizes. Virtually every rim I have bought for winter tires starts with an "X" from generic rim manufacturers. Costco quotes these numbers, as well as Canadian Tire, but the web for some reason has no available information on tire compatibility, which is quite strange in this day and age. From what I have read and what I heard in the responses, the TPMS will remain lit for the whole time I have winter tires installed (if they have no sensors fitted). I am ok with that. I was more concerned about the dealership's claim that it is illegeal to fit tires without TPMS. I have assumed that this is no more than a scare tactic on behalf of the dealership. Thanks for the feedback. Doug

Thanks for the feedback. Doug Here's the end result. The X42755 rims will not work with P245/65/R17 tires. The rims are too narrow. Have gone with P235/65/R17 tires with these rims.
