jillian
Is the invoice price on fordvehicles different then the one the dealer would have? I'm this close to pulling the trigger and the invoice price the dealer gave me was $500 more then the exact same built car on the site. sim
There are two invoice prices, the advertised one you can find on Edmunds/MSN/whoever, and the dealer invoice which is less than the advertised invoice by a figure known as a holdback. I think the holdback on the SE's is something near $500, as you go up the trims, the holdback gets somewhere near $900. The holdback is typically is about 2-4% or so of the car value before adding in the extras. That is why they can offer you "invoice" pricing and still make some profit on the deal. As far as i am aware, the holdback is a time-limited feature to encourage the dealer to sell the models within a certain time period. Those that have been on the lot a while, the dealer might have paid that holdback back, in the case of the Edge's that doesnt seem to be an issue! I wouldnt try to beat a dealer down below this bottom line dealer invoice price as they probably wouldnt make a penny on the car - everyone is in business after all! Allow them some room for profit, just not the usual margin that they get off Joe Public paying MSRP. We had a good deal, this X-plan thing sounds like a great deal we didnt know about before, but i didnt think they were generally offering prices quite that low yet on a relatively new car! We have quite a shortage of Edge's on the lots here, so given the demand, the general selling price has been only a little under MSRP from what i have seen/heard in a few places. jillian
I'm still confused, I guess. Having never seen an "advertised" invoice- I can't say what that is, and I'll take your word for it. To be specific, on fordvehicles.com when your build a sel+ with a few options the invoice price listed is $500 less then the dealer said it is. I would think that the ford website and the ford dealer would have matching invoice prices. Seeing these two numbers not match, gives me a feeling like he's trying to pull one over on me... (can anyone tell I haven't dealt with a whole lot of dealers before?!?)
sim
The "invoice" prices are on msn autos or edmunds or cars direct or other such sites: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/pricing....e&trimid=-1 http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/ford/edge/...size/index.html http://www.carsdirect.com/buildyourcar/zip...amp;modelid=613 Most of them have a calculator showing the invoice and MSRP prices of each component you are interested in and all of them list the MSRP and "invoice" price of each trim without the extras. The price that they wont tell you, only Consumer Reports seems to sell that info ($14 to get that info), if the holdback price which is below the "invoice" price, ie what the dealer is most likely paying - buying in bulk they can get even more of a deal. The dealer is going to go in with whatever price they reckon is reasonable. There are also some credits available and other discounts slowly working into the market that the dealers can use, i dont know if the price on Ford includes that or the dealer is holding that back to use as another bargaining piece. I would do some more research if i were you, regarding which features, the range of costs that the car could go for with that price and dont limit it to just Ford sites or what the dealer suggests. The difference you're seeing is not due to holdback - that is included in the invoice and rebated later. It's due to other fees that vary such as dealer association advertising fees, etc. These are fees the dealer must pay so it's fair that they are included in the dealer's actual invoice. If this link works you can see a sample invoice showing the advertising assessment and fuel charge which won't be in the edmunds, kbb, etc. invoice figures. https://www.fordpartner.com/partnerweb/pdf/...lan_invoice.pdf
Former Ford ZM
Holdback was created as a way to withhold cash from the dealer so they could pay their taxes. Think of it as your personal tax withholdings. That refund you get in the spring isn't extra money, it's money the government withheld from your earnings to cover your tax liability. Ford holdbacks some cash when the dealer purchases vehicles. When they are sold to a retail customer, that money is credited back to them, regardless of how soon or how long it takes to sell.
