Programming a garage door opener?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, just wondering if the garage door opener controls on the visor work when the car is shut off. I have an 09 Limited and do not see this information in manual. Would like to know before going through the hassle of programming the controls. Thanks!

Yes, it will work with the car shut off and key out of the ignition (BTW use Caution activating the garage door with the car inside the garage - manual says not to operate while inside the garage as there could be damage due to a clearance problem). I also programed one of the buttons to open the security gates to my community.

yes it does on the 08, so would assume so on 09 (?) but why would you not program it if it didn't? you only open the door when the car is off?

My Edge is garage kept. The rare instances where I park it outside overnight is why I am concerned. If someone breaks into my Edge they can open my garage. I was hoping that the controls would not work with the car off! Thanks for the replies!!!!

It's powered from a constant power source - same as the vanity mirror so yes, if they break in they can open the garage door. No different than if you had a regular garage door opener in the car.

In my buddy's Lexus his visor opener does not work with the car off, so I was hoping the Edge's was the same. When I park our Edge outside I take my opener in the house. With the crime rate in S. Florida, and my luck, I would wake up to find my mountain bike, lawn equipment, and tools stolen. Oh well! Thanks again!

It wouldn't be hard to rewire the power to the visor through a switched source. Just tell Lex it can't be done and he'll work day and night to figure it out for you. He lives for mods.

I know in my Lexus RX330 (not a visor system but rather the homelink is connected to the upper dash, kind of where the sunglasses storage unit is on the Edge) it definitely works with the car off.

I just bought a 2009 Ford Edge, but can't find anywhere in the manual on how to set it up. Any help would be super!

Hi kapstar. :D In the PDF version of the 2009 Owners Manual (which is just a PDF version of the actual Owners Manual), the Index lists the "Homelink wireless control system" instructions on page 81. I checked, and they are there on pages 81-83. There is a chance your page #'s could differ slightly (never say never), but the instructions are in your Owners Manual, so check the Index.

Hope this information helps.

Good luck. :beerchug:
