Mechanical key not working on drivers side door lock.

Recommended Posts

I have a 2013 Limited, went to open it this morning with the fob and my guess is the car battery was dead.  So I tried the mechanical key and it didn't work. I was finally able to get into the car, pop the hood and give it a charge.  The fob works perfectly, unlocks and locks the doors just fine. Still the mechanical key goes in fine and turns  but will not open the drivers door lock.  I tried two spares and they don't work either.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  TIA

Is it push button start, or key start (not all Limited have Intelligent Access with push button start)? If the key fully turns in the cylinder enough to lock or unlock it, and it isn't, then it seems like the key cylinder linkage isn't hooked up. I suppose I would first try lubing up the key cylinder and latch with a spray (even WD-40 would help short term and clean it up).

Even with vehicles I rarely, if ever open using the key, I still do it once a month (less with my Edge since it has a cover over it that is prone to breaking eventually, but is more protected), and once it starts getting rough I clean them up.

I also believe that do to lack of use, the lock cylinder is probably gunned up. Second on spraying WP40 into the key slot.

Now, some cars have a twist when using a mechanical key. Don't know if it affects yours, don't think Ford uses, but doesn't hurt to try.  Put the key into the key slot, but don't turn it. Wait 5-10 seconds then try.

Per the sections of the 2013 Edge Workshop Manual attached below as PDF documents, and the following illustration:

The door lock cylinder (item 6), mounts into the door handle reinforcement (item 7), and a D-slot in the back of the door lock cylinder engages with the D-shaped end of the door lock cylinder actuating rod (item 14), which translates the door lock cylinder rotation into a lock/unlock effect in the door latch (item 11)...

Only the door lock cylinder (item 6) is removable from the door's exterior, allowing inspection of the door lock cylinder's D-slot rotation, and, the position & condition of the D-shaped end of the door lock actuating rod (item 14). If these items appear good, then removing the interior door panel will be necessary to assess the other components.

The following YouTube video provides a beginning-to-end glimpse of what may be involved in that subsequent inspection...

Good luck!

Thanks, I did take the interior door panel off and saw the D slot on the back of the lock Cylinder.  I did not see any linkage on the D slot.  I now suspect that the linkage wasn't secured properly when the dealer replaced the latch under a recall.   Looking down through the window slot I couldn't see anything obvious.  Going to watch the video and see if I can figure it out.  Thanks again,

Ahhhh ...... yup.

That would have been a good thing to mention during the original write up. 🤔
