2021+ Edge?

Edgingage

Recommended Posts

This is probably a stupid question, but I see 2021-24 Edge rolling around, why isn't in here a subforum for 2021+ Edge?  What don't I know, please?

I'm looking around to purchase a pre-owned 2021 Edge SEL and I came here to get some info about it.  Where is it?

Sorry and thanks.

Yes, it has been requested before, probably enough difference (SYNC 4, ST 7 speed)? Or just do 2019-2024 Edge and 2024+ Nautilus?

Do you want to know about 2021 Edge in general (https://cdn.dealereprocess.org/cdn/brochures/ford/2021-edge.pdf) or what might have changed from 2020 and what options your 2021 SEL might have (https://media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North America/US/product/2021/edge/2021-Edge-Order-Guide.pdf) or an overview with some details https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/products/crossovers---suvs/edge/2021-edge.html

Or post questions in the 2019-2020 Edge, which is pretty similar to 2021 (SEL lost some features)

Oh, I see, the moderator got stuck updating the server for this fora in 2022...  I hope nothing wrong had happened to Robert personally.

It's too bad, definitively this is a great forum, it has been VERY valuable to me and my 2011 Edge so far and keep going.

I'm just browsing around looking at the possibility to update my 2011 Edge SEL, trying to find out if there is any big cons for a particular year Edge trim.  I'm not looking at a specific year in particular but rather at a year range models, 2019-2021 Edge/Nautilus available in my area at around $20K+ (Canadian).

A couple of "most have" in my wish list are:

- pano roof (Canadian summer is great!)

- heated steering wheel (Canadian winter sucks lol)

- and maybe the AWD (I've never driven one but everybody says it's great for Canadian winters)

Thank you all for your prompt response folks, apprecicated.

I have a 2024 ST and here are few things I can say.  In 21 they went to the bigger touchscreen (sync 4) which is kind of game changer. The navigation screen is awesome! I got the 401A package which gave me the sunroof and heated seats/steering wheel. I have gotten spoiled the heated steering wheel for sure.

I did get the performance brake and tire package which is great because you get the bigger calipers and rotors. The only issue is they come (only) with summer tires which work good for where I live, but not good in your climate. They should offer that package with a few different tire options, but they don't.

Also, in 21 they went to a 7-speed transmission (via programming) and helps with the performance. I drove both and the 7 speed is an improvement.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks a lot STBEAST, good info shared.

One of the three Edge I have narrowed it down it's a 2019 and in part it reads the following:

Performance
Power Steering
Limited Slip Differential
Automatic Transmission - 8 Speed
Performance Tires
Dual Shift Mode Transmission

So, it reads 8-speed transmision (not 7-speed).  I don't know if that's the same you mentioned or something else differently.

Also, it reads that it comes with "Performance Tires", but I'm not sure if that means "brake and tire package". But here in Canada it's very common to get a second set of wheels as a winter set, either negotiated in the purchase value, or purchased separately off the market.  Now, I can't see the rim size in the picture below, and I don't know yet if this vehicle allows for different rim sizes as the 2011-2014 do (from 17" to 20", and 22" for the Sport).  Edit: I just checked and it seems this model can take from 18" to 21" rims.

There're a couple of other things that I'm not familiar with, I don't know what they mean:

- Limited slip differential

- Dual shift mode transmition

As this's a 2019 model, as you STBEAST very well said the big screen it's not in this model yet, although that's definitiveley very nice to have that's not in my must-have wish list.

Thank you STBEAST and everyone else for all info and clarification you can provide.

Often times the ads for these have nonsensical details. Most of that doesn't make sense, or all of them have it. Dual shift? Could be Sport mode, could be AWD with paddle shifters). Name any vehicle in the US that doesn't have power steering!

Those wheels, with the painted front and side facia with chrome means it is a Titanium 301a with the Elite Package (and it has enhanced active park assist, front camera, pano roof since no side roof rack bars, etc etc etc). You can find the brochure or order guide for it as well to determine what it really has. The wheels are 20's, if it is AWD you can go down to an 18 inch wheel (as long as it is the right backspacing and not weird, you can get standard Edge 18s for example).

LOL, I know what you mean with those nonsensival ads LOL: power steering.  Yah, right, try to turn the wheel without power LOL.

Thank you dabangsta for the info.  Yes, it's an AWD.  I could get standard Edge 18 wheels but my understanding is that they cannot be from the 201-14 Edge (what I currently have) because the 2011-14 Edge rim bolt pattern is 5x114.3 mm and I think this model Edge takes 5x108 mm.  So, I'll have to buy another set.

I'm talking as if I already own that vehicle LOL, I haven't bought it yet! lol.  But it's looking good.  Let's see if I can get a discount on the price, that's usually the point where everything fells apart...

Thanks again dabangsta and others for the info and comments, appreciated.

Yes, 2015+ is the 5x108mm (5x4.25in) bolt pattern.

All 2019-2024 Edges have the 8 speed 8F35. The problem is there is rough behavior from the transmission. To fix the problem, second gear is skipped, making it a seven speed transmission. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10203649-0001.pdf

The ST doesn't have the 8F35 (it is the 8F57). That linked document is about a reprogram, that doesn't skip a gear.

Only the 2021+ ST is programmed to skip 2nd gear, effectively making it a 7 speed transmission. The gear ratios between the 8F35 and 8F57 are different.

I drove a 2019 ST at the SUV performance school and Utah and could see why they eliminated the second gear. When the vehicle shifted from second to third the RPMs barely changed at all. Almost like there was no need for ONE of the two gears (2nd or 3rd). The ratios were way too close.

Now that I have a 2024 ST with the 7 speed the RPM change is much more noticeable because essentially it is going from first to third (eliminating the 2nd).

I am really surprised they didn't design it that way from the beginning.

It was. The 8-speed on the 2.7 was an updated design from the previous 6-speed by adding a shift between the original 1st and 2nd (making a new 2nd) and adding another shift at the top (after the original 6th and becoming the 8th). So with the reprogramming of the 8-speed they cancelled the "new 2nd".

Folks, first of all thanks again for all your input, it's really greatly appreciated.

Tomorrow (Friday) afternoon I got an appointment to test drive the 2019 Edge pictured above.  I'm not sure if I understood correctly your comments regarding the 7-8 speed and the reprograming/correction thing.  In other words:

- how do I know if that "issue" has been already corrected "reprogrammed" in that vehicle?

- is there any recommendation on how/what to try to test if the 2nd-3rd gear shifting hasn't been corrected in this vehicle yet?

Also, I'm planning to test drive the 2021 SEL on Saturday morning.  Although it does have the big screen that everyone likes ;) with the updated SYNC IV, there's something really ticking me off that vehicle: the tail end (no exhaust chrome tips?!).  Ugly LOL, like not being original part from that vehicle LOL.  The bumper has the shape/mold to accomodate the exhaust tips, but no tips; weird.  See picture below.

Thanks folks.

Since it is a 2019, and it is not an ST, it has the 8 speed 8F35. While there is a reprogram available for it, you likely wouldn't be able to tell if it has been done or not, not on a test drive, or even short term ownership.

The indication of the issue is stated as:

Quote

Shudder/buck/jerk while driving up to 35 mph (57 km/h)

So if you detect that, it might not have been done yet, that is what you would be on the look out for.

2021 they deleted the chrome tip exhaust for SE and SEL, so the tailpipes are expected. However that valance/trim shouldn't have the exhaust cut outs, it should be straight across the bottom. None of the media site or brochures show anything but Titanium or ST, so no good Ford official views of the SE/SEL. It likely has been replaced for some reason, could be just it was damaged, or there was more extensive work done.

This is what it should look like:

Aha..., that's why it looks weird, because that bumper shouldn't be the one lol.  OK, I'm going to ask them for a service report on that vehicle, thanks dabangsta, that bumper has four sensors for the reverse parking.

BTW, the one shown in your picture looks like the passenger side is a little disengaged, or at least misaligned.  Maybe those rear bumpers are problematic?..
