Starfare
My 2015 edge had -11,000 miles when I purchased it in 2019. I bought a full warranty but barely drove during the pandemic. Recently I noticed the waves in the moon roof glass and the moon roof glass that doesn’t open! What the heck? This is a Fors defect! Biker
I know it's an old thread, but the glass on my 19 Titanium fully exploded while I was driving it last year. Thankfully the inner screen was closed. A million little pieces of glass to pick out of the inner roof frame.
Clpeltz
Just had the panoramic sunroof glass crack! Don’t know why or how it happened. Can just the glass be replaced? Our shop is quoting over $10,000! That is insane! They say they have to replace the entire sunroof. Help! Do you have the panoramic sunroof? Did you just get the glass replaced, or did you have to get a new sunroof? Our glass just cracked and our shop is saying we need a new sunroof and that you can’t just replace the glass. They quoted over $10,000! Help!

I had the panoramic sunroof on my 2016 edge, it cracked, i replaced it myself. but I am a mechanic.. if yours is similar, 10,000 is absolutely attempted theft of your vehicle.
omar302
Just as @Cerberus stated, 10K is theft. The glass cost is about $600-$650 plus shipping. If it is the front (moving) panel, then the replacement process is very simple. 6 screws to remove. However, the rear is more involved as it requires to lowering the headliner and cutting the urethane that holds the glass. But, since the glass is already broken, maybe it can be cut from the top after breaking through the glass. Also, take note that the 2016 Edge has acoustic Laminated Roof glass. Newer (2019+ I believe) are regular tempered glass. Replacement glass from Ford for all models is also tempered glass. So if you are the type of person who gets irritated from additional sounds, I would recommend getting used replacement glass from a 2016-2018 model and ensure it has "Laminated Safety Glass" written on it. I had the panoramic roof glass on my 2018 ST-Line crack just like that at about 10,000 miles. Luckily it was covered by the windscreen policy included with my car insurance, so just had just a nominal sum to pay (£50). The company that did the replacement told me that Ford no longer supply this roof glass laminated (it just isn't strong enough for this use and they all crack like that eventually) ; they provide only toughened glass (aka tempered) which is about 10 times more resistant to breaking. Only problem is if it does break all the tiny little fragments come crashing down on your head and get everywhere inside the cabin, including inside the roof mechanism. The work was completed in less than an hour. I think the guy who fitted mine said the replacement glass cost about £1,000. That's interesting. When the laminated glass sunroof cracked on my Edge it was replaced with toughened/tempered glass, but I didn't notice any increase in noise as a result. STBEAST
I am a bit confused. I would assume for liability reasons; the sunroof glass is safety glass. What is the difference between tempered and safety glass? Also, I see very few posts about cracked sunroof glass. I am thinking that 90 percent of all Edges never have this happen. Other than something hitting the glass what would cause this. Maybe in Freezing climates?

If nothing hit it, the fracture has to be a manufacturer problem.

I clearly notice the extra wind noise when the shade is open. If the shade is close it is difficult to differentiate. 6 hours ago, STBEAST said: I am a bit confused. Laminated glass is made of two layers of glass with a material sandwiched in-between. It is much more difficult to break through. Tempered is a single sheet of glass I think thermally treated. When it breaks it shatters to small pieces.

However the most common reason (according to the glass replacement company who did my roof glass) for Edge sunroofs to crack is stress, caused by the vehicle flexing whilst in use.
garycrist
Water! Just plain WATER! Most people have never watched a glass cutter so they never knew a simple trick. Before they score the glass, they lick their finger, then drag it behind the cutter. That weakens the glass by IIRC 3 orders of magnitude! So, a rock nick, some rain , a big bump, a twist (sounds like I am going to hurt my back again) of the body and out magic a crack zips across the glass. This is one of the reasons to repair "bulls eyes" or stars on windscreens. Just like evacuation of an A/C system, one needs to remove the water before releasing the adhesives.
Darren
My Partner is in the process of purchasing a late UK Ford Edge. Her one preference is a glass roof no matter what make or model. We had a test drive, we came to an agreement for issues to be addressed before fully commiting to the purchase. The Panroof slide was shut, the last thing on the list was to see how much of an affect the panroof had on the interior cabin light. Low and behold the the cover was opened to expose a cracked glass, the saleman's face was a picture, even more so when I told him the price of a new one fitted. We are still going ahead with the sale once all the defects have been sorted, including the roof. I think there may be some further negotiating once the sales rep reports back to the owner of the car lot. My partner works at the Hyundai import centre, they have a number of cracked glass roofs come through, these are dealt with by an independent body shop, they also do a number of other manufacturers roofs including Ford. It may be a case of striking a deal for us to have the work done, They took a video of the car a few weeks back, the slide is open, i wonder if anyone noticed the crack? The tint hides it quite well unless you really look at it. Edited October 28 by Darren spelling mistake
