Performance chip: worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I purchased a 2013 Edge a few months ago and so far I'm really loving it. The only complaint I have is the disappointing lack of "get up and go". I know this wasn't meant to be a speed demon, and I'm not expecting it to be. I just wish it had a little bit of zip when I hit the gas. When I give it a little extra, say I'm trying to pass someone on a two lane, it gets louder but doesn't really accelerate that quickly. Just to put things in perspective, my wife drives a 2015 Acura MDX. When you give that thing gas, it takes off! Again, I know my Edge isn't a Mustang, lol. Just wanting to give it a little pep. I've thought about a performance chip, but wondered if it was worth it? Do any of you have one, and could you tell much of a difference? Thanks!

What model and engine?

If it is the 2.0 Ecoboost engine it is about 50hp down from the MDX (but more torque at a lower rpm), the 3.5 would be similar in HP but lower in torque. The 3.7 had better of both. But HP and torque are just a part of the equation.

The 2.0 is more reactive to mods and tunes. It might be more of a perception difference and more responsive shifting (tried Sport mode?) that might be able to helped with a tune, instead of just adding power. I can't find the final gearing for the Edge but I don't think it is as high as the MDX. Also you might be more likely to be running premium fuel in the MDX? There is some seat of the pants differences running premium over regular.

Its my understanding that all grades of gasoline have exactly the same heat energy and using premium does nothing to increase hp.

On engines designed for premium, using regular will drop hp slightly as they were designed for premium. (Higher compression.) But engines designed for regular wont benefit from premium. (As I understand it, premium may mask the knock sensor signal and cause the engine run too lean.)

It depends on whether the engine software is designed to take advantage of higher octane by advancing the timing.  Thats where the extra power comes from - has nothing to do with the fuel per se.
