tammybrian2 Posted September 29 Report Share Posted September 29 Hi everyone, i'm about to get into replacing the water pump, but i thought i'd ask before i start tearing into it. 08 ford edge limited, 160k, my neice was driving when engine started to overheat, was leaking fluid from passenger side, i'm guessing from the overflow container fluid was hot with air bubbles being pushed out. (that's the description she gave me ). her grampa changed thermostat but it sounds like coolant is still leaking out the overflow. this sound like a waterpump issue? thanks Brian Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Suspect a blown head gasket - you can loan or buy a device from Autozone to test the cooling system for combustion gas to confirm head gasket issue, and/or a compression and leak down test. dabangsta Posted September 30 Report Share Posted September 30 There are a couple of passages out of the "front" of the engine, which is on the passenger side, that coolant would weep through if it was a waterpump leak, but a full on water pump failure, like the fins are no longer there, could make it over heat (pushing lots of coolant out of the coolant bottle), but there are more likely candidates as mentioned above. tammybrian2 Posted October 2 Author Report Share Posted October 2 i tried the combustion gas leak test. the blue fluid only turned a lighter shade of blue. not green/yellow color at all. i tried this three times. the last time i tried for over 19 minutes, with the tube in the coolant overflow. the coolant level (cold) started out around the middle of the overflow container. as the engine warmed the level started to come up so that it was close to the bottom of the tube/fluid, i'm pretty sure that contaminated the tube, so i dumped that out and started again. each time i did this, the blue fluid only changed to that lighter shade of blue, then at the end i had a bit of coolant coming out the top of the overflow. so i'm going to guess there's no headgasket issue..........but i've been wrong before! thoughts?? thanks Brian 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
tammybrian2 Posted October 3 Author Report Share Posted October 3 i talked to a couple friends of mine that are in the mechanic business, they both leaned toward the fact that because the fluid changed to a lighter blue color it could still be the head gasket issue. so i'm going to replace both along with the water pump, guides, tensioner and head bolts. enigma-2 Posted November 11 Report Share Posted November 11 8. If the test fluid turns yellow in gasoline engines or green in diesel engines, it indicates the engine has a combustion leak. If the test fluid remains blue, no combustion gas is present in the coolant indicating there is no combustion leak. If leaks are detected, have engine repaired by a qualified repair technician.
