Engine failure, engine swap

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a 2016 Ford Edge SE 2.0L ecoboost fwd that just suffered coolant intrusion on cylinder #3. Was wondering if it's possible to do an engine swap from a 2020 & up Edge with the same setup? Has anyone out there done this yet? Any info appreciated. I took it to our local auto repair shop & they want $6K to swap it out with a reman motor from Jasper. Unfortunately, Ford has the engines on hold?? Just wondering if a 2020 & up would swap out easily into a 2016?

I would suspect with all the differences in the 2019+, including the EGR cooler, that it wouldn't be an easy swap.

Unless Jasper specifically states that it is the new style block, it might still have the same possible outcome. I suspect that a Ford dealer can get it in within a day or 2, and at $2600 for new long block, maybe getting it and having the repair shop replace it might be more thrifty, what is their breakdown parts versus labor? Obviously there are other things that should be replaced with new versus swapping over from the existing one (like water pump), but it shouldn't be a long list (you can look at the TSB for the parts list, and the labor of 13.3 hours, so $2600 in labor at least at the dealership, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10169807-0001.pdf).

Dabangsta, Thank you for the info. I wondered if there were changes. These later model vehicles have to have something changed every year or two. So it's impossible to swap any components like the drivetrain easily. I'm ready to go back to a 1979 Camaro or something! Too much money for these newer cookie cutters. The longblock price for the Edge I can deal with. $2500.00 bucks. It's the labor nowadays. I've been a mechanic/electrician for 40+ year's. Recently swapped out a subframe on a '95 Chevy Astro van that was rotted out. I could swap out the engine on the Edge, but what issues would be next?? Programming?
