Phineas
I have a 2014 6 cylinder Edge which I purchased from a new car dealership, USED, a couple of years back in 2022. I use the vehicle primarily for Door Dashing, 5 to 6 hours a day, for 5 to 6 days a week, since purchasing it. So the car is shut off and restarted many times throughout my workday. When I brought the Edge, I initially looked up potential problems the car might have, and came across that the transmission fluid might need to be changed. Had a qualified auto repair person take care of that. The other thing in my initial research on the 2014 Edge mentioned something about a exhaust code, or recall due to some exhaust issue; which I didn't understand. I didn't seem to have an exhaust problem so I ignored the information, thinking the previous owner may have resolved any factory or code issues. At first everything seemed fine but after approximately 6 months after purchase, I have experienced RANDOM but not frequent brief OCCURRENCES OF EXHAUST FUMES IN THE INTERIOR. They may happen for maybe a minute, and I open the windows and vent the fumes and they are gone. The occurrences are MANY months apart and unpredictable in timing. They are also so brief, they would be gone before I could reach my mechanic. I have tried to find the information I originally saw on the exhaust code/recall but haven't been able to sort through all the information on the Ford Edge to bring or express the issue intelligently to my qualified mechanic. They are highly qualified, but they don't specialize in any one make of vehicle. I can think of only one thing which is or may directly related to the issue of exhaust. That is: when I purchased the 2014 Ford Edge, I was getting 20 miles per gallon gas mileage. Since that time it has slowly dropped down to about somewhere between 18.2 to 17.9 per gallon gas mileage. Has anyone who has owned a 6 cylinder Edge experienced this problem of brief random exhaust fumes in the interior of the car, and knows how the issue should be addressed?
Bunky
If you smell exhaust in the interior, you obvious have a leak somewhere and should identify and fix the leak before worrying about engine performance. For this, I do not think you need a specialized mechanic except it should be someone with a good nose. A Ford dealer may have specific experience if it was a common issue. If it happens at certain times (like idle), you could mention that and if a rear passenger smells it more. I personally would guess it is in the rear somewhere or related to something bolted to the floor like the seats.. Haz
Welcome to the Forum @Phineas! From your earlier research, you may be recalling the following Technical Service Bulletin (TSB), which is Ford's recommended Service action when the described symptoms are present, in this case, when the Climate Control system is set to Recirculation Mode... TSB 14-0201 EXHAUST SULFUR ODOR AFTER HARD ACCELERATION - CLIMATE CONTROL IN RECIRCULATION MODE ONLY Publication Date: October 28, 2014 FORD: 2011-2014 Edge LINCOLN: 2011-2015 MKX ISSUE: Some 2011-2014 Edge and 2011-2015 MKX vehicles may exhibit an exhaust odor in the vehicle while the climate control system is in recirculation mode only. This may be more noticeable after hard acceleration, driving in hilly conditions and/or towing a trailer. Customers may indicate the odor smells like sulfur. ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE Remove the rear bumper. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-19. Replace the four (4) air extractors. Lower and support the rear section of the exhaust system. Clean the areas on the underside of vehicle where seam sealer and expandable foam will be applied. (Figures 1-6) Cover the exhaust system. Apply a generous amount of Motorcraft® Seam Sealer to the rear horizontal sheet metal lap joints on the left and right sides of the vehicle and the rear sheet metal overlap flange across the rear of the vehicle. I do wonder if, through the course of your workday, your repeated opening of the driver's door may be creating a brief negative cabin pressure that could be pulling-in small amounts of sulfur/rotten-egg exhaust odor. Additionally, the sulfur content of fuel varies, so trying a different fuel brand may alter the amount of rotten egg odor. Good luck! JohnnyST
Hi gang, new owner of a 2019 ST. I have noticed this exact problem in my vehicle, under heavy acceleration (merging onto highway) after 5-10sec I get the exhaust odor that lasts about 30 seconds or so. It is almost certainly the same cause. Are you aware of a TSB that affects the 2019 ST, and how would I go about finding that myself? Last item, I’m at 55k mi but did buy the full extended warranty. Is this a warranty item ($100 deductible) or something that Ford would repair as no charge due to the TSB? Thanks in advance - John
Haz
There is no comparable TSB for 2019 Edge, though your Edge has similar Quarter Panel Air Vent Grilles... Link to this FordParts webpage; Link to Right Hand version of this grille; Link to this FordParts webpage; Link to Right Hand version of this grille; The TSB mentions how Ford Warranty/Extended Service Plan (ESP) coverage is determined... On 8/28/2024 at 8:27 PM, Haz said: Warranty/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool. When you take your Edge to the dealership, make sure you have the Service Advisor ride with you so that he/she first-hand experiences the exhaust odor and acceleration characteristics that produce the symptom, and perhaps take a copy of TSB 14-0201 with you. While the TSB is not directly applicable to your 2019 Edge, it does specify replacement of the Vent Air Grilles as a partial solution of the symptom. Additionally, the Service Advisor should be able to promptly determine if those replacement parts would be covered under your ESP contract. I expect the Service technician might remove the rear quarter interior trim, and then duplicate the vehicle acceleration with an assistant adjacent to the vent(s), to see if the odor can be localized to the vent(s). And as previously mentioned , changing fuel brands may affect the degree of rotten-egg odor -- for better or for worse. Good luck!
