Downshifting Without Paddle Shifters

Recommended Posts

Yup, without the paddles, Sport is the only assist. My 2019 doesn't have paddle shifters either, I have bought a wheel with the shifters to swap them in, another user here posted they just installed the wheel and they worked, but it was not a 2024 like yours. 2019 paddle shifters where available with AWD, but 2024 only on ST or with tow package.

There is some built in automation that will help in addition to sport mode when it senses you’re going downhill with the brakes on.

I still prefer manual downshifting but it’s manageable without it.

I have to go into S mode to get engine breaking when going down hill.

Oh no - what broke on your engine? 😂

seriously though - Our 22 Nautilus does it in D mode.  Are you riding the brake?

When I go downhill in normal D mode, there is some engine braking when I press the brakes, but I feel a lot more engine breaking in S mode.

From the 2022 Edge Workshop Manual, with emphasis added...

Sport Mode

In S mode the transmission selects the optimum gear for best performance. This gear selection is typically lower than that of drive (D) and the shifts are faster. For vehicles equipped with steering wheel paddle switches (SelectShift™), selecting sport mode allows the driver to change gears up or down.

S mode provides:

  • Additional slope, engine braking and extends lower gear operation to enhance performance for uphill climbs, hilly terrain or mountainous areas. This can increase engine RPM during engine braking.
  • Additional lower gear operation through the automatic transmission shift strategy.
  • Quicker gear selection and at higher engine speeds.

Good luck!
