Cerberus
So my Alternator is smoked. I diagnosed it, but sent it to the dealer because I thought I had a warranty in place. However, the dealer who sold me the vehicle, sold me an 84mo/120,000mile plan which back dated the coverage to date of original purchase and zero miles... I am pretty annoyed by that, but that is not the point here. The dealership where I live now (not the same place) wants $1600 to do the job, to which i said a hearty F*ck that. Parts are on the way. Has anyone here done the job? (Omar? I remember you said yours went bad) Does it have to be done the way the manual suggests? I do have the ford service manual extract pages for this job which talks about dropping the A/C compressor, Comp bracket, belt tensioner, and then the Alt. My question is, do I need to open the system? I have a vacuum pump so its not a huge deal but I'd rather not if I don't have to Also, I was quoted 3.6 hours to do the job which seems high, but I don't have any labor time resources to check with to verify. All constructive input welcome

Nick Halstead
I did mine myself and replaced belt while there. Yeah it sucks. Remove spare tire, unhook AC (which will need filled again) just follow the guide.
omar302
Sorry, I did not notice my name. I did not have an issue with my Alternator hence I don't have experience. Also I was expecting @Haz to jump in to help, as usual, and reply to you. I hope he is ok and doing well.

sosaudio1
Reviving this because I need to replace the alternator and well belt and pulley's are going to go with that. I have seen a bunch of info about the wrong belt out there... Saw a guy with a 2.7 ecoboost Fusion saying the part stores are recommending the wrong belt and I have looked through a metric ton of pages about the belt Saw the same guy say that to loosen the tension on the belt you need to tighten the bolt on the tensioner since it is a reverse thread when the manual says different Saw that I needed to remove the AC compressor and discharge the freon... My sticker on the car that I researched said the car was purchased with the tech package and so that is the 210A alternator. However the VIN is saying it is the 175A alternator. It does have heated seats non-cooled....but it also has the 120V outlet in the back and someone else said that could be why the tech pkg option was added.... Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks
1004ron
Why not go to a site like RockAuto.com and select the parts listed for your model? Sound like the Fusion guy is leading to more confusion. What Model & Year Ford Edge do you have? - please add that to your profile signature - https://www.fordedgeforum.com/settings/signature/ I highly doubt that the AC compressor needs to be removed for an alternator replacement. dabangsta
There are better threads that had details on the actual alternator replacement, like the following that has the steps. As far as what alternator it should have, if you put in the VIN in the Ford parts site it should tell you specifically which one it needs, so if that said 175 then it is as good as any unless you take out yours and verify it first.
sosaudio1
Mine is like yours 1004Ron. 2017 Sport 2.7 AWD. Yeah. The documents do talk about removing the AC Compressor. Just confirmed with the docs that I have and the ones Haz uploaded. Only mine is an older form of the same doc showing 2015 2.7 and the one that Haz shows the 2016....However, if it has been done without pulling the compressor out of the car, I would love to do it but I feel like that is a no go. So the rub. Got the car from CarMax about 3 years ago. Sticker showed technology package. Somewhere along the line....and I cannot remember how, I was able to figure out and come across the original sticker that was supposed to be on the car from the first dealership. That window sticker says, technology package. However, its only heated seats not cooled seats. When I use the VIN decoders it brings up the 175 Amp which is not rated for the Technology package. Rock Auto says Technology Package=210 Amps. When I check Fordpartsgiant using the VIN I get F2GZ-10346-B. Someone on Reddit said that it should be a F2GZ-10346-A to be the 210 Amp Alternator. 2015 manual says 10300. FPG says 10346 The attached document is from my 2015 doc that I purchased...ugh....wish I could find the absolute latest doc...but anyway... I can DM someone the VIN to decode. I may be freaking completely upside down here but every thing just looks odd. Plus....digging in the engine bay by the old alternator reveals the nut for the stud is missing and the bracket for one of the AC hoses is on the other side of the alternator....dangling....it was left resting...with some force on one of the inlet lines on the front of the engine....hoooray for previous owners or the last nutjob shop that I had to take it to from CarMax. I am down for putting the correct parts back in the car and doing it the right way. I just need further guidance when it comes to the missing steps regarding dumping the freon, removing the AC lines from the compressor, how to make sure they are clean before reinstalling them in the space to work with. All the things. I really don't want to cause more damage from doing this the wrong way. I appreciate you guys helping a noob that is hoping to not have to take it to a shop and spend another $500 (if I supply all the parts) or $846.43 based on 175A alternator. I have a belt 680K6 (1725mm) and one pulley 38018. The plan is to get the other pulley and if I can pull it off, the alt, and just do it my own self. Yeah.....I figured....argh....so what is the best way to do this if you don't have the evacuation tools? Suck it up and take it to a shop? That area got fairly knackered when the shop CarMax had to warranty work....that CarMax wouldn't pay for to let them do....didn't put the valve cover back on correctly. I had to have it towed back to them for them to fix it but I figure and see evidence of a fair amount of contamination there which is why I was going to replace the belt and the pulleys but then was reminded that the alternator is definitely on its way out. "My car sounds like I have a mild cam installed in it and the lights pulse" ie, regulator is failing. So while I had it all apart, I figured, why not, lets go ahead and tackle the alternator. Where in TN are you, wanna come help a dude replace an alternator? LOL

Where in TN are you, wanna come help a dude replace an alternator? LOL Personally, given the quote I was given to do the job at the dealership, I'd buy or rent the evap pump and gauge set. Even if you buy them it's much cheaper to do it yourself. I already owned the tools so it was an absolute no trainer for me. And yes, I would have recommended R&Ring the belt and idler/tensioner while you're there. I did. I'm in the Knox area but my time is so monopolized by my employer, that i simply don't have enough hours off in a row to even entertain the idea of a job of this size. But it's not a hard job of you have all the tools you need and the perseverance to see it through. The hardest part to me was the awkward positioning on jackstands which had my working the absolute hell out of my neck muscles to nearly the point of failure.. lol

Link to this FordParts page Good luck! Awesome!!! Thank you!! So I'm thinking of going to a location on base here and seeing if they can bleed off the refrigerant for me. I can do that and drive it back home without damage to the compressor right? The compressor should failsafe seeing there's no refrigerant and not engage? Really don't want to buy an AC compressor. I'll have them recharge it when I'm done. Haz, I'll look over all the docs and make sure I get everything. Thinking through all this, would it be a problem going with the 210A alternator in place of the 175A? I would think that the car will only draw what it needs as it needs it. So that will be a cakewalk for accessories. Just trying to make sure there is not going to be any issue. I at first was wanting to make sure I got all the facts, now I'm wanting to see if I can facilitate the bigger alternator. One more quick question... So, the guy in that Ford Fusion video said the tensioner pulley bolt was reverse threaded, aka, righty-tighty actually loosened tension...is that the case or no? All this and now, I need to replace the brakes because they are grinding..... I need beer... Woohoo carworking weekend is coming!!! Seriously, if anyone wants to bring their Edge over and help me do all this and then I'll help them with work they have, we'll make a party of it!!
