Am_sg
Recently had my harmonic balancer fall off 2013 ford edge limited 2.0l while driving. Called a tow truck and after a few days of letting it sit, I cranked the engine and it would not turn on. I Took it to the mechanic and he insisted on correcting the timing on the motor then replace the old balancer with the new. The vehicle turned out to not turn on after the job was “finished”. The mechanic mentioned the main issue now is the engine valves folded & aren’t able to function properly. Found it really odd so I paid him for the labor, brought the car back home and now I’m completely out of options. I’m thinking the issue may be that I need to replace the crankshaft sensor under the harmonic balancer. Appreciate the feedback in advance. dabangsta
I don't know how the harmonic balancer would cause the cam and crank to be out of time and cause valve to piston contact and bend up the valves. That would mean the front of the crankshaft behind the timing chain gear separated from the rest. But with any catastrophic issue like that I guess a lot can happen, but I would think bent valves would be easy to detect before putting in a lot of work not to fix it or knowing that makes it not worth fixing. 1
1004ron
It’s apparent that you didn’t take it to a reputable mechanic - the first thing that should have been done on finding an issue with the timing and before going ahead with the replacement of the timing components, would be to assess the consequential damage knowing that this is an interference engine. Throwing more parts at it isn’t going to help - you need to consider a replacement engine.
