edgemaster
Guys, just replaced my rear brake pads on my 2009 Edge. Everything works fine except when I back up the left rear wheel squeals awfully. I jacked both rear wheels up and checked the parking brake. Seems to work fine, relaxed or fully engaged. However, when the parking brake is only about half engaged, I can turn the right wheel forward and backward with some drag. The left wheel can only be rotated forward with some drag but not at all backwards. Time to replace the parking brake hardware?
edgemaster
Looks like nobody seems to have an opinion! Pity!
txaggie
Does the 2009 have electronic parking brake? If so did you put it in maintenance mode when you worked on the brakes?
edgemaster
No e brake, just old-fashioned wires!
txaggie
The perhaps the cables need adjustment for the new thickness of the discs?
edgemaster
I don't understand what the thickness of the discs has to do with the parking brakes.
handfiler
It could also be the piston(s) hanging up in the caliper. If they had any crud/rust on them, that would have transferred into the bore when the pistons were retracted to make clearance for the new thicker pads and rotors. edgemaster
But is it at all necessary to replace the parking brake shoes? They can't be worn thin from parking, right? Those pistons, there's no brake fluid involved, right?
dabangsta
2009 has the combo rotor/drum with small parking brake shoes inside the drum inside the rotor hat. If it was "pad slapped" and the rotor not removed or replaced, I don't see how it would be related. Was the caliper removed and the slides checked and the shims replaced? edgemaster
No, the rotors and anything inside the parking brake drums were never removed. I'll have to check what's going inside those drums.
JoeVic
I had the same sort of issue but with a 2004 Crown Vic. It had the same parking brake in a hat assembly with little brake shoes as your Edge. It would lock up in reverse only. Turns out one of the linings separated from the metal shoe from rust and luckily it only caught when in reverse. Working in that confined area between the hub and backing plate was not fun. Glad I had worked on ancient drum brakes decades ago, so i knew how they worked. You are probably going to have to open everything up. edgemaster
I think you're right, I'll have to open everything up.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
i had this with our 2007 on oem pads and rotors. mostly went away with aftermarket equipment but will return occasionally. probably why they put silencers on the 2011-2014 lol. edgemaster
Guys, I've just removed the rear disc/drum to replace the parking brake shoes but I don't have the foggiest idea how. I've searched the internet but can't find a youtube which explains the details. Can't figure out how that C-shaped one-piece is attached to the back plate. Can someone point me to a video that shows that? Thanks!

edgemaster
Thanks, nice video but it does not address a 2009 Edge parking brake removal!
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
i have not watched this video but the title claims to show you parking brake replacement
edgemaster
OK guys, current status: I checked the parking brake pads and the piston movements. The pads look almost like new, no difference in thickness to new ones. The pistons in the calipers move nicely, everything seems to be in ship-shape. So I closed everything again. The squeal is still there, louder than ever!

If its pads squealing I would put a small bevel/chamfer on the leading and trailing edge of the pads.
edgemaster
Didn't take photos cause everything looked normal to me. No separate pads, just the same c-shaped thingies as in the video. I don't know what exactly is squealing, hence my posting this in the first place. Sorry to be a nuisance.
edgemaster
One more piece of information: when I back up and the squealing starts I slightly hit the parking brake until I feel some breaking but the squealing doesn't change. So, seems the parking brake is not the cause, right?
